The Preamble in License Plates

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States rendered in personalized license plates from each of the 50 states.  Created by conceptual artist Mike Wilkins in 1987, the installation now resides in the Smithsonian.

    I miss seeing some of the simple license plate styles from the late 80's... they're so complicated now.

    I have a poster of this in my office. I always thought it was neat. And, yes, there are 51 plates. The 50 states plus the District of Columbia, in alphabetical order.

    I find it ironic then that the individuals punching out these plates are most likley in prison.

    To be specific, you can see it at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in DC (Metro: Gallery Place).

    Now, this is much more artistic and original than the girl-skin rug. And he didn't have to make up some claptrap about his parents for us to appreciate it.

    Because Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) has their own plates; Hence 51.
