Hackers Hacked by Fake ATM

Posted by John Farrier in Blog & Internet, Odd News on August 5, 2009 at 7:49 am

At the recent DefCon hackers’ convention in Las Vegas, a fake ATM deceived many hackers in attendance:

An organizer for the conference said security authorities seized the device. It’s not known how long the ATM was in the hotel or whether it was placed there by a DefCon attendee to catch his fellow hackers or simply by an outside criminal group trying to target conference attendees.

Witnesses say the kiosk was well-placed to avoid surveillance cameras….

Markus said it was clear to him the ATM was fake when he looked at the smoked glass on the front of the machine and noticed something funny about it. When he beamed a flashlight through the glass, instead of seeing a camera behind it, he saw the PC that was set up to siphon card data.

The ATM had been placed right outside the hotel’s security office.

To be fair, the news story at least doesn't indicate that ANY hackers were fooled. But it does make for a nice ironic headline, even here ("Hackers Hacked"). The ATM just happened to have been sitting there in the hotel for who knows how long, and it was discovered during (even early on in?) the hacker convention. Eventually, investigation might find some hackers who were faked out, but the data sure isn't there at the moment, AFAIK.
Just sticking up for the geeks!

If this incident has taught anyone anything, it's that not everything is as it seems. Assumptions should always be explored, and questions should always be asked.

You can smoke in Vegas, so of course there are more hackers there.

Well now, that's odd. Yesterday I posted a nifty joke, and today it was gone. I reposted, and now the original shows up again.

    So laugh twice, OK?

I love how in the full article there is a note at the bottom that says "Photo of “non-malicious” ATM at the Riviera Hotel and Casino by Andrea Matwyshyn."

Non-malicious? Anyone who has used an ATM in Vegas knows they are ALL malicious.
