15 War Machines by Leonardo Da Vinci

By John Farrier in Weapons & War on Aug 3, 2009 at 7:04 pm

The Toy Zone has pictures and descriptions of fifteen weapons or defensive systems that historians have found sketched in the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. These include a tank, cluster munitions, and mobile walls. The picture above is of a pivoting radial barrage canon found in the Codex Atlanticus.

That was a great post. I loved the giant crossbow, that could’ve done some damage i’ll wager. But you couldn’t pay me to be inside the armored boat when that thing was in a battle, it looks way to dangerous.

Leonardo was definitely one of the greatest minds of all time, and boy did he have a knack for war, which was way more prevalent then than now. And the genius of the Wall Defense gizmo is mindblowing for its time.

    As for Fortress…Minas Tirith, anyone?

    Gunpowderpunk?

Da Vinci must have had an agressive note in his personality. Mona Lisa one day and tanks and giant crossbows the next.

    He wasn’t all that agressive.
The main reason why Da Vinci made so many drawings for weapons was because in those days his art didn’t always sell that well. And because the Masters with the Cash mostly were doing battle (most of the citystates had wars with eachother), it completely made sence to advertise knowledge of how to make incredible invincible superweapons that could inspire fear into the opponent and give the user status, glory and an edge in battle.

there is a show on the discovery channel, i think, called doing da vinci.

and basicly all they do is bring his war machines to life.

Da Vinci’s War Machine is giving me an idea for a Marvel Comics character redesign
