Painfully Obvious Rules of Photography

Posted by Urbanist in Arts & Crafts, Funny, Pictures on June 17, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Photography can be such a serious art, but taken too seriously it becomes formal and boring – at least for folks like Ivar Gravlejs. With 78 exhaustive tips he ranges from humorous to obvious, dead-pan to just plain stupid. Still, some of us would do well to remember the basics when taking pictures – or will at least get a laugh out of his twisted spin on conventional photo tips.

I think it was #14 that says remember to take the lens cap off. I didnt read them all but I would add remember to put film in your camera.

#18 When you photograph a still life try not to overexpose.
    #28..the same
-The first photograph is actually underexposed... if that was the actual film then it would be overexposed.

    The rest are just silly!

Wait...nevermind. I always get film and paper confused. Ignore that last comment!

the guy at #78 didn't really have eyebags and pimples. also, he actually wrote rules specific to an onion and a sausage.

The hardest thing to do with photography is not to put the subject dead in the middle. Most people look into the eyes of someone in the viewfinder and that ends up centre-frame. Which makes for very ugly pictures.

    pretty funny but,

the problem i have with this is that almost all of the "wrong" photos in this series ended up being much more interesting in composition and portrayal of subject matter than the "right" photos.

Fun, but some of the advice go against good composition.

I mean, who cares for photographs with the subject matter dead center, with the camera straight and everything like a family album?

I loved them all. So funny!!

But they don't give you any tips regarding ISO speed.

Is it weird that I have a sudden urge to photograph sausages and onions?

They were nice for the most part. However, I didn't like the ones about things like "centered subjects", etc. since that often makes for bland, run of the mill type photos.
