The Time Bomb That Can Wipe Out The World’s Wheat Crop

By Alex in Science & Tech on Jun 14, 2009 at 1:35 pm

It’s not bad enough that soon we’ll run out of bluefin tuna, now scientists are saying that we may also lose wheat. The stem rust fungus could wipe out 80% of the world’s wheat as it spread from Africa.

Enjoy your bread while it lasts! Karen Kaplan of the Los Angeles Times has the story of a "time bomb" for wheat:

Crop scientists fear the Ug99 fungus could wipe out more than 80% of worldwide wheat crops as it spreads from eastern Africa. It has already jumped the Red Sea and traveled as far as Iran. Experts say it is poised to enter the breadbasket of northern India and Pakistan, and the wind will inevitably carry it to Russia, China and even North America — if it doesn’t hitch a ride with people first.

"It’s a time bomb," said Jim Peterson, a professor of wheat breeding and genetics at Oregon State University in Corvallis. "It moves in the air, it can move in clothing on an airplane. We know it’s going to be here. It’s a matter of how long it’s going to take."

Though most Americans have never heard of it, Ug99 — a type of fungus called stem rust because it produces reddish-brown flakes on plant stalks — is the No. 1 threat to the world’s most widely grown crop.

    My wife is on a carb free diet. She will love this turn of events.

    One of a myriad of reasons why I don’t have kids. I just don’t give a crap if we run out of oxygen, wheat, oil or privacy: I’ll be dead in 40-50 years max and after that… screw you all.

    The peace of mind that brings me is quite nice. Try it!

    Oh noes! I remember some 5 years ago an article somewhere saying that bananas were about to go extinct. Now tuna and wheat. I say some kind of transgenic fungus-resistant variety will be developed before wheat crops are really endangered.

    If this fungus plague is really as bad as these crop scientists reckon, this could mean a dramatic plummet in the world human population. Swine flu who?

    That’s great, Alex! We all need more “everything sucks” kinds of stories. Maybe something else about dead babies or nuclear holocaust. How about a scary weather forecast? Or some of those electron microscope shots of the creepy bugs that live off your dead skin?

    I think Alex’s intent is from a scientifically “neat” angle. And to raise the alarm that similar minded people do something about this purported crisis.

    The genuine threat behind all these stories is the prevalence of monoculture crops in modern agriculture. It’s a problem that can be solved, but only if it is recognized and addressed.

    Old news and a real grouse book in the vein of ‘cosy catastrophe’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Grass

    Out of print and worth a quid, also a very good read.

    another illuminati bio-engineered and genetically-altered fungus designed to thin out the worlds population prior to their takeover in 2012.

    Like tr said, this is a biodiversity problem. In ancient times there used to be many of varieties of wheat. Over time they “weeded” out the less productive types more in favour of those that grew larger, tastier, and produced a bigger yield. Chances are one of those types we used to have would been heartier and immune to this fungus, but it’s too late now. Unfortunately, corporations like Montisanto will used this situation to make lots of money with little responsibility attached to it.

    I know this is a family friendly blog but fuck. Fuck. I really hope this is not as bad as people predict it to be.

    and skidworth. How’s that tin foil hat treating you?

    @Reechard

    There are plenty of other grains still available, it’s just that humans have stupidly made themselves dependant on a single crop. There’s still millet, and it’s also better for you then wheat so now there’s lots of time to change if people actually bother to and now more a reason to grow it as an alternative.

    @Reechard

    Actually, while skidworth’s post was obviously exaggerated, wheat stem rust was being developed for use as a biological weapon by the United States in a program during the 1960′s, so it may have been a comment in reference to that.

    This is really scary. This fungus could cause enormous starvation worldwide. The US HAS to come up with something that works against this thing, or our farmers will lose billions.

    now a days climates are changing and nature has started to kill the human as the reason is the warming and use of CFC’s etc.
