Canned Meat, Fish & Bugs From Around the World

By Queuebot in Food & Drink on Jun 1, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Potted meat product, quail eggs, snails, and armadillo? Sure I’ll try anything once. I never realized how many canned meat products were out there.

A whole chicken. That jelly is pretty off putting.

Well, I never knew there was high demand for chicken in a can ;) That someone would actually go out and make the product.

I just hope when your site has your Mystery Sale, you never decide to make this one of the secret items that you send out :D

I used to get canned meats of all sorts and take them to work to share with a friend/coworker. She worked in the reprographics department (large-scale camera and film developers, making negatives for printing projects) and was often the only one there, so we’d convene in the cool and quiet with my latest find and sample alligator, rattlesnake, what have you. Best one: musk ox.

I’m also partial to the canned baby octopus I find at the 99 cent store. WHOLE, teeny tiny baby octopus. My husband leaves the room when I crack open one of those tins.

By the way, the fish balls shown at the link are likely NOT to be the Asian variety suggested in comments, seeing as the brand is “King Oscar” — that’s probably the Scandinavian sort, more like a really fine-textured and miniature gefilte fish. Last brand I bought had cod and tapioca prominently listed in the ingredients.

You can already buy chicken meat packaged in a can like tuna and it’s ok. Seriously… why the whole carcass?

Yuck, that whole chicken is just so disgusting.

Anywho…. I freakin love SPAM.. and love Mackerel in a can. Get it from the korean store and it’s SO tastey… yum yum.

That is clever. I must get some for when the Zompocalypse arrives.

    Goya Pork?

This makes me glad I haven’t eaten meat in 36 years.

That was pretty funny. I think some (like the Armadillo) are gag-gift packaging, but still amusing.

SPAM is delicious, especially when fried and topped with melted cheese on a sandwich. Ultra yum.

I think I’ll stick to getting fresh chicken from the supermarket if I needed it, rather than from the can. Unless the chicken in the can was cooked in some special way e.g. stewed or roasted. If it’s just boiled, doesn’t make much sense to buy the canned chicken.

I’d like to see what kind of vomit-worthy-drinks the “McNuggitini” ladies could concoct out of some of these items.

I think the second picture’s fake, since the label says “fully cooked”.
