Study Ball Makes Sure You Study

Posted by Queuebot in Gadget on May 17, 2009 at 8:57 am

How many times have you begun to study for an exam and after 30 minutes get distracted and move on to doing something else, and at the end you are left with no other choice but to stay up all night studying for that final at 8:00 am? Well, Study Ball is here to solve the problem.

The Study Ball gadget is a prison-style ball and chain that you can program to keep track of how much time you spend studying. Once you’ve selected the desired duration, you chain the ball to your ankle and the manacle won’t come off until the schedule study time is up.
A red LED indicator displays the “Study Time Left“ and keeps you informed as to how much longer you’ve got to keep studying. The ball and chain are made of highly durable steel and weighs a total of 9.5 kg / 20.95 pounds, which makes it difficult to move while wearing it.

For safety, the Study Ball cannot be programmed for more than 4 hours. Minors should not use it unless supervised by an adult. It comes with a safety key for emergency deactivation. Link – via coolest-gadgets

hahah, that's hilarious, why didn't they invent this BEFORE i graduated from college??

I could use that for the kids, but I imagine that social services would come and take them away and put them up for adoption.

Doesn't the safety key kinda ruin the whole point?

    May 17th, 2009 at 11:42 am

if you're really serious about studying, swallow the safety key... and make sure you have lots of cleaning supplies and a strainer for when your prolonged study session has concluded. of course, even THIS could be bypassed by triple dosing on laxatives...

I wrote about this one...it's pretty cool actually. I mean, using it excessively isn't a good idea on younger kids, but hey, I could picture a few situations where this could be useful.

With a safety key, the point is moot. Without a key, it's a safety hazard in case of fire, bull stampede, zombie apocalypse...

Nice idea, but this doesn't help me not getting distracted by the indefinite depths of internet...

If you need this, you are already doomed to a future career in fast food. What is it with people today that have zero self control or will power?

What do you do when the battery dies? Stuck with a ball on you when you go drive to the store and pickup some more batteries?

I've always felt studying was a stupid waste of time. If you don't understand the topic the day before the test, what the hell good is attempting to cram information you don't completely fathom when you're stressed already. Make the effort to learn while you're in the classroom, and actually ask the teacher for help with the subject matter, it's what they're there for.

With the key - you can always give it to somebody else to hold and only use in emergency.

This was obviously invented for the procrastinating sadomastic student in mind.

What an idiotic device. Don't eat or drink before using it!

Ball and chains work well for labor gangs because the inmates could still move around, but couldn't make a run for it.

Ball and chains only slow you down, they don't result in you being immobile. And if you look at the picture the ball looks to be about 10 pounds, max.

Obviously this is a gag gift - but pretty dumb even at that level.

I have lots of ideas for this, and studying isn't one of them!

  18. Jess
    May 18th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

@CrypticJ: Studying the night before an exam isn't really all about getting all the concepts down at the last minute. I've never been big on studying myself, but it would make sense to review ideas that were taught at the beginning of the section, or whatever the test is over. And memorizing formulas and equations, for stupid courses that make you do that.

Also, there should be some kind of StumbleShield on this thing.

  19. Lilian
    May 19th, 2009 at 12:35 am

What are u talking about. Sure the safety key is needed, maybe someone will use that not just for that reason...

  20. kirk
    May 19th, 2009 at 12:38 am

how about you save yourself the money and tie a fucking block of cement to your leg

  21. Brett
    May 19th, 2009 at 9:53 am

You could just throw the key in the garbage as soon as you get this thing home. I mean, really...how "unsafe" is this thing? Or better yet, you could lock the key in a safety deposit box...should take you almost four hours to get there with a big ball around your ankle, so at least you get a few minutes out of it.

  22. Kevin
    May 19th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Only 20 pounds? That's not very heavy. It's a cute design though. :)

  23. James Green
    May 19th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

#3 Throw the safety key away.

#22 Tie a cinder block to your foot and try walking around with it. Heck, 5lbs. on your foot is pretty heavy.

    May 19th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I don't think that the key makes the concept moot. Usually, if I'm studying and I get distracted, it's on a pretty subconscious level, where I suddenly realize halfway through that I was supposed to be studying and somehow got started making cookies or something like that. If I had to consciously look for a key in order to do something else, it would remind me that I'm supposed to be studying and I would not get distracted as much. But I agree; it'd have to be away from the computer, because the internet is a dangerous dangerous place.

so much for not procrastinating...im doing tht right now lol
    :)

  32. J
    May 20th, 2009 at 1:31 am

It simply needs a loud embarrassing alarm of moderate to long duration activated by the emergency key. Then you can have a release latch instead of even needing a key. This way you can get it off in a second but you're not likely to do so unless it's a real emergency. Voila!

What a waste of time inventing this sh!t ... the guy that invented it would be best to take it on it's head.

I am a substitute teacher and I see a great use for a classroom full of these things! I swear, when I was in school people could actually sit in a chair for more than 10 minutes...apparently that skill is foreign to today's kids.

  36. Erra
    May 20th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Only makes sure someone stays in one place (pretty much). No way to ensure studying ensues. As evidenced by the fact that we're all on stumbleupon.

  37. Pandemic1444
    May 20th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Gag. The manacle is too large. It would fit most people's thighs.

  38. Navz
    May 20th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

"Doesn’t the safety key kinda ruin the whole point?"

Totally true unless you give the key a trusted one but still, It really ruins it all.

  39. B-rizzle
    May 21st, 2009 at 1:29 am

If you're worried about the key ruining it, then give the key to your roommate or a friend and tell them to hide it...if you really feel like you need it you can beg them to unlock this steel study ball from your ankle.

  40. KrustX
    May 21st, 2009 at 2:05 am

But then, wouldn't you be more concerned to how much time left than to actually use the time to study? If I had that thing in my ankle I'd be as distracted at looking how much time there is left as grabbing a soda on the fridge or turning on the TV.

I think this is a pretty good idea.. for those of us who cant keep their mind on studying

i sure could have used this in school

and well i think it should be used for kids too, social services cant do anything if the child has agreed to use it

  46. Garfield135

Oh well, I got through two college degrees with high honors anyway...

I don't think this will work for me. The majority of my time is spent distracting myself on facebook, the ball wont work for that

  56. Embee
    May 25th, 2009 at 4:01 am

the thing is, when i get distracted while studying, it's usually while surfing the internet. so the ball and chain wouldn't help much at all.

They need to make the key connected permanently to the ball, otherwise the chances of losing it are too high.

I know that after a few weeks I'd probably misplace it.

Also imagine having one of those on and someone comes in and sees you wearing it lol.
