Lonely Pig in Quarantine

Due to fear of swine flu, Afghanistan has quarantined its pig. Yes, the nation’s only pig, normally on display along with other exotic wildlife at the Kabul Zoo.

The pig is a curiosity in Muslim Afghanistan, where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious, and has been in quarantine since Sunday after visitors expressed alarm it could spread the new flu strain.

“For now the pig is under quarantine, we built it a room because of swine influenza,” Aziz Gul Saqib, director of Kabul Zoo, told Reuters. “We’ve done this because people are worried about getting the flu.”

    This makes no sense! The poor pig can’t get this strain of the swine flu because there are no other pigs to infect him (unless of course, he catches it from a human).

    The pig is probably better off in quarantine to protect it from someone who is just ignorant enought to hink it could give them swine flu. You hear about crazy people jumping into animal cages at zoos all of the time for some ridiculuos reason or another. What if some crazy vigilante tried to kill it to protect the zoo patrons? Just hide the pig until it all blows over. The zoo may say they are protecting the public from the pig, but in reality they are probably protecting the pig from the public. People who work in zoos are smart enough to know better. (Usually.)

    It’s an opinion, if people get it or not doesn’t matter to me. I’m just firm in my belief of separation of church and state to keep crap like this from getting out of hand. Hell if I care if they want to build the pig it’s very own Alcatraz, I’m just glad I have nothing to do with it.

    Gauldar is right. It’s so odd that people would want to live their lives according to some silly faith. How backwards is that?! That would be as weird as a bunch of people assembling in one particular place, on one particular day, to talk to an invisible man. I’m so glad we’ve evolved past that here in the sensible, secular west.

    The quarantine is silly but I think having this little guy in their zoo is cute. He’s in a zoo so I doubt his new enclosure is any worse/better than his usual digs
