Back when Mr. Potato Head smoked a pipe, kids played with real potatoes instead of plastic substitutes! Check out this vintage ad for Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (potato not included).

My grandma has all the pieces for the original Mr. Potato Head, including the felt ‘eyebrows’ and such. But I think they’re just in a bag, not the box. I don’t remember.

When I was a kid, we had the Mr. Potatohead kit that we used with a real potato. I’m guessing that it was a thrift store or garage sale purchase, but still. I remember that it wasn’t easy to push the pieces through the skin of a potato.

I remember these. Yeah, I’m ancient.

You’re not ancient; you’re young at heart which subtracts years from your age!

There are few things more terrifying than to put Mr Potato Head parts on a real potato, then leave it in a dark place for a few weeks. The results could have come right out of a Lovecraft story.

I can sort-of see the removed pipe due to political correctness, but why no real potato? Are they scared the little darlings might actually get dirt on their fingers?

    Ray,

I think it had more to do with the extremely sharp points on the very hard plastic pieces. But it might also have had to do with mothers finding said “Lovecraft” versions of the potato head creatures in kids’ rooms or around the house!

Don’t you love commercials where it’s obvious the little boys’ cartoon voices are women? I know it’s an old practice, but at least June Foray & Nancy Cartwright are convincing!

My grandma had these Mr. Potato Head rip offs, there was a ketchup bottle and some other random food items you could put the eyes & other stuff on. Man I wish I still had those, they were cool. Did anyone else have those?

Yeah, life was more fun before everything got all safe and stuff. Carried our pocket knives to school and played with them, had chemistry sets, clackers, bb guns, bag of glass, happy fun ball, all that good stuff…

Hello. I just thought I would let you know that I will be selling my #2000
Slim Dandy potato head in the box on ebay this week item number 260400377054 It is complete to the point that the cellafane package that holds the extra parts has never been opened and is still stapled to the cardboard insert. It appears that the items have never been removed from the cardboard. Thought you might like it for your collection, Thanks Rick
