Sleeping with Scorpions

Posted by Queuebot in Odd News on January 26, 2009 at 2:48 pm

A Thai woman who calls herself the Scorpion Queen spent the last 33 days in a glass-walled room filled with 5,000 scorpions, successfully breaking her own world record for being cooped up with the venomous creatures.  The room was in a shopping mall in Pattaya, Thailand,  and every eight hours she was allowed a 15-minute break.  Kanchana Ketkeaw was bitten 13 times, but she says she’d do it again if anyone challenged her record.

Pssh. Those are Emperor scorpions (pandinus imperator, for those few who care). Their vemon is extremely weak and the arachnids themselves are docile and highly unlikely to sting unless provoked. I used to have a friend who kept some around, they were tame enough to handle without being injured.

Also, the site mentioned that she was "bitten" 13 times. This is unlikely, as their mandibles are too short to reach past their nonexistant little heads. Being pinched by their claws is more likely, and speaking from experience it really isn't that bad.

No thank you. That's a long time to have to watch where you step.

They need to stop letting people make up these stupid records. Big deal, so she was in a room with scorpions and spiders and whatever else...whoopdidoo
It's like some of those others, like the guy who can spin all of those basketballs at the same time, and whatever other lame ones....
    just not interesting.

"They need to stop letting people make up these stupid records. "

    They who?

Do you really think "They" should stop letting people spin basketballs? Stop and take a deep breath; think about what you are saying. Maybe "They" will decide to stop letting people sit in front of their computers and type things. In my opinion, "They" are already stopping people from doing too many things. "They" should mind their own business, and "Let" everyone else mind theirs.

Bitten by scorpions? No problem. If she were actually stung, that wouldn't be too much of a problem, either.

Yes, it'd be nice if THEY got things right the first time. Thank you, Talula, for your remarks! I understand having a fear of scorpions (or spiders, flying insects etc.) but it helps no one if myths are perpetuated. Not all scorpions are dangerous. Not all spiders can hurt you. Most miniature wildlife just does not give a shit about us. Let's leave it alone.

Whether she got bitten or stung or whatever... the idea of being in a small room with a bunch of scorpions just gives me the heebie jeebies.

I think "they" usually refer to Guinness World Record people, and yes, "they" do limit what they will verify and give record for.

No most-disgusting-things-eaten or dangerous stunts anymore ...
