Repainted Action Figures

By Miss Cellania in Toys on Jan 7, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Topless Robot lists The 10 Best Repainted Action Figures of All Time.

They’re the bane of many an action figure collector’s existence–repaints. That’s when a manufacturer takes an existing action figure, paints it in all-new colors and tries to pass it off as a new figure, such as “Arctic Batman.” This allows the company to squeeze a little more profit out of the expensive mold they created for the original figure. Collectors hate them, kids are indifferent to them and the figures warm the pegs. But once in a while, a figure is repainted (along with a few minor tweaks) and is passed off not as just a new figure, but a brand-new character. The results are often laughable but, once in a while, kinda cool.

Pictured is TC14, who resembles another robot we all know and love, but couldn’t be the same, because he is silver! Link -Thanks, Keith!

I remember actually owning some of those figures.

Identical twin bad guys… sure it’s the same exact toy but kids still want both.

Repaints, ack. My younger son wants every Transformer out there, and, yes, if the colors are different and the name is different, he has to have it. He pays for most of them out of his allowance, because I refuse to pay for repaints.

This is what I hate about My Little Cash Cow. Every time Hasbro has to pay the mortgage they slap a different sticker on the poor thing’s arse and send it out the door to milk small girls’ parents the world over.

Oh, and the same goes for the apocryphal “Daisy Meadows” the the awful Rainbow Magic books. There’s about as much thought in each of those as in a My Little Cash Cow repaint.

TC14 is clearly not just a protocol droid like the golden sibling, unless “protocol” has been amended to include “carrying a large silver dildo on a tray that looks like a clockwork wristwatch.”

And if that amendment has been made, why didn’t anybody tell me it’s time for a career change?

Battlecat was one of my favorite toys. I never even noticed that Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker were the same model, Im pretty sure they at least had different faces. One repaint that I always wanted was a Yellow Daredevil from Toybiz’s Marvel Legends but he was pretty rare and I never saw one on the shelves, I suspect the employees at every store I tried took out the one per case for themselves.

Oh actually that Daredevil was from series II of Spider-Man Classics, pre Marvel Legends line. Yeah, Im a dork

Tomax and Xamot really do not count as repaints. The torso and heads, were entirely different sculpts.
However the 2005 resculpts, head molds were probably the most re-used.
