Shark Commits Suicide on Water Slide

By Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on Dec 20, 2008 at 9:44 am

A shark at at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas jumped out of its seawater enclosure onto a nearby water slide and slid down into the swimming pool! No one was in the pool Tuesday morning when it happened.

“Yesterday morning at around 9:30 AM, prior to the resort’s waterscape opening to guests, a 12+-year-old female reef shark jumped over an 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure into the resort’s Leap of Faith water slide.

The Atlantis Aquarists believe the shark was startled by an unusual circumstance that we have no way of defining completely. In the over ten years guests have experienced the Leap of Faith, the reef shark itself, harmless to humans as it is fed regularly by our staff, had shown no previous incidences of leaping out of the water in the marine habitat …

The aquarium staff immediately retrieved the shark from the pool, but the chlorinated water had already poisoned the fish. She died shortly after. Link -via Simply Left Behind

    Hey I’ve been there before!

But yeah, I really doubt the shark was actually trying to kill herself. The tanks there are enormous and it was fed regularly.

Would it have made a difference if the swimming pool were salinated instead of chlorinated?

    Dec 20th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

From the pictures, it really doesn’t seem like the wall was that high… she probably just got startled or was really interested and accidentally jumped into the slide. That’s too bad though, poor thing.

    Dec 20th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

PJG:- Yes, it’s far more likely to have been that it was fresh water not salt rather than the chlorine that killed it.

aside from other explanations it might be possibel that it had it’s beady eyes on the tasty feasts going in and out of the pool.

Chlorine can be pretty deadly, and chlorinated water moreso to something that breathes through gills.

I think a shark could survive a bout of fresh water for a while if put back into salt water. I believe the death was in fact casued by chlorine poisoning.

    Dec 20th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

As already hinted at, the ‘suicide’ post title overstates the incident a bit. I mean, we do not call auto accidents suicides.

But it makes for a ‘tastier post’ (there and here) … so what the h3ll.

We all have heard of whales that beach themselves and die. Alot of whales that are held in captivity die. Perhaps this shark wanted out of its prison and gave it’s life trying. Something to think about.

  27. Dara
    Dec 22nd, 2008 at 9:22 pm

It was likely the chlorine, not fresh water, that killed it. That, along with an inadequate enclosure.

Sharks have been known to swim up freshwater rivers and streams, no problem.

Just look up the Jersey Shore attacks from 1916 that inspired the Jaws movies – the final attacks were in fresh water – Matawan Creek, 30 miles inland. 2 dead, one severely injured.

How do they know the shark committed suicide? Couldn’t it have been an accidental death? Did the shark willingly jump into the tank knowing that it would result in it’s death? Had she been depressed lately? Did she leave a note??

Reminds me off the tiger incident last year. Remember the one where several people got mauled (1 died) and it turned out (after a lot of denial) that the exhibit wall wasn’t high enough? An 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure between a shark exhibit and a waterslide… This could have ended up a lot worse.

“Sharks have been known to swim up freshwater rivers and streams, no problem.”

I believe only the Bull Shark is capable of breathing BOTH salt and freshwater. This shark was a reef shark.

There are a few species of sharks in Kenya that are “Freshwater” sharks. I don’t know if they can handle salt water though.

“Shark commits suicide”– now I have heard it all. Maybe it committed suicide because of the economic crisis, it’s Christmas and could not buy gifts, perhaps it lost its house. Yeah that’s it, it lost its way from its house and by accident landed on a water slide.

Shark indeed is very tasty! If you are a seafood conseign(sp) Sometimes we are eating shark, and we don’t even know it.

I find it to be most interesting how a shark, which lives in water, can be killed by chlorinated water, and at the same time, our governmental “know-it-alls” say us humans have to have chlorine in the same water we drink. Is it me, or what???

  46. Toddish

Sharks “breathe” water. So, a shark in chlorinated water would be like a person in a room filled with poisonous gas. DEAD

  47. Kodiak
    Dec 23rd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Marine fish that are subject to fresh water basically there cell structure explodes. Same vice cersa. Sometimes when trying to save a fish that is infected with some type of parasite this procedure will be used. If done when the fish is to far gone, of incorrectly yes it will kill the fish. But I agree the chlorine probably had alot to do with it. I have also been there, and the chlorine levels at that slide are probably the max allowed. Just like the sign at my pool in the back yard says. Notice the is no P in our OOL please keep it that way. But all jokes aside it was a tragedy, 2 fold, that it happened, and that the shark was there in the first place.

    As the saying goes,
Water is always bluer on the other side.
Why did the shark cross the slide?
To get to the food on the other side.
I believe the shark wanted to hunt its
    food not be fed.
