Brussels Sprouts + Gorillas = Bad Situation

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animal, Odd News on December 18, 2008 at 11:39 am

Chessington Zoo in London has issued an apology to guests after giving the gorillas a Christmas treat of Brussels sprouts. The seasonal sprouts are highly nutritious, but the gorilla farts caused horror among people around them.

Gorilla keeper Michael Rozzi said: “We feed the gorillas brussel sprouts during the winter because they are packed with vitamin C and have great nutritional benefits.

“Unfortunately, an embarrassing side effect is that it can cause bouts of flatulence in humans and animals alike.

“However, I don’t think any of us were prepared for a smell that strong.”

The zoo has taken the sprouts off the menu while the zoo is open to the public. The gorillas will enjoy them when the zoo is closed on Christmas Day. Link -Thanks, Rich!

Apologising to the guests? What about the workers that have to manage the cages?

Just one more reason that I don't understand the British obsession with brussel sprouts at Christmas.

It's bad enough when humans eat brussel sprouts and fart. I don't even want to contemplate a gorilla fart. Though hey, it's not like they smell so great to begin with.

Um they are animals...if brussel sprouts are good for them, then why should they not get them just because some people are offended? Deal with it.

LESSON: If a gorilla asks you to pull its finger, DON'T!

They were prepared for the smell, but they didn't expect it to be that strong!! LOL!! That is a tear-jerker ... literally. I'm suprised there isn't a tax on the gas emissions.

So it's what's most pleasing for the guests vs what is best for the animals' health?

not exactly tony, since theyre still giving it to them when the zoo is closed...
its actually whats better for the animals
less people will come if it smelled so bad, means less money for the gorillas, and vice versa.

Hey, this isn't near the effect of the methane cow farts that add to global warming. Get a grip, people.

We have a similar problem when the dogs eat broccoli. They end up spending the day out in the yard.

how about apologizing to the gorillas and telling the humans to get a grip? Who goes to the zoo for the smell? How many fresh-smelling gorillas do YOU know?

Brussels sprouts are really healthy. I enjoy them a lot but I haven't noticed any fart effect. I guess I don't eat that much of them, that's why!
