Squirrel Kebab

Posted by Alex in Animal, Food & Drinks on October 28, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Squirrels are overrunning the countryside of Devon, England, so Chef Ed Chester decided to do something about those pesky critters: he’s making squirrel kebab!

Cook Ed Chester reckons squirrel meat is delicious and is also selling pates and fricassees made from the rodents.

He believes the spread of grey squirrels has damaged the countryside and it is a good idea to eat them to control their numbers.

The squirrel dishes have become an instant hit with adventurous diners at the restaurant at Otterton Mill, near Budleigh Salterton, Devon.

Wait, isn't there a viral video on the net somewhere with a mom showing how she prepares squirrel patties for her kids? Perhaps they're from the same family tree.

That's pretty big for an Eastern Grey squirrel. Usually you need to go to the Fox Squirrels to get that much meat.

As an invasive species, I'd say the Eastern Greys are "ripe for picking" in the U.K.

Perhaps he's holding it up close to the camera. Either that or it's a rabbit in drag.

Eating squirrels must be something new in the UK.

For those who have never had squirrel. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

that is a pretty darn big squirrel - and alot of meat - I'm not sold -
also, Squirrels have had to be eradicated in some places as they can carry the bubonic plague (I think Denver had to once shoot all their squirrels in the park?) - does cooking kill the disease?

Squirrel is good eat'n. Just takes so many to make a decent meal. And they must get big in the UK wish they got that big here.

It's illegal to eat Squirrel in Canada? WHY? They breed faster than rabbits around here.

Red ones are mighty tasty. Grey, I just couldn't get past the nastiness of the texture or the oiliness.

In Maine you can't get anyone to eat grey.
    Rat with a purty tail.

    Sids right, rsd\fox nummy.

It's not the dead squirrel that bugs me - it's the creepy look on his face. Today, squirrels. Tomorrow...?
