Ambient Awareness

By Miss Cellania in Everything Else on Sep 22, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Facebook and Twitter help you keep track of every move made by your friends. But is this a good use of your time? ABC News talked to Clive Thompson, who wrote about the phenomena for the New York Times, what he calls “ambient awareness”. Link to segment. Link to entire webcast. Link to New York Times article.

I opted for the NYT article and have to say it did illuminate for me what the appeal of twitter is. Not that I’m going to start tweeting, but I see it more than just mundane thoughts now. In 2005, Myspace was kinda fun, but now I just use mine to host music that I don’t feel like buying.

I would never hire someone who uses Twitter or updates their status/life more than once a day. Such a person is possibly self-absorbed and quite definitely has problems prioritizing their daily tasks.

    Dear “Not Your Boss”
Did you even read the article?

As long as there are stupid, time wasting social networking sites to occupy the masses, there will be more opportunity for the rest of us to spend on more worthwhile endeavors. Much like pot and seeking out the latest indie music sensation, these indiscriminate pastimes of youth will be left in the dust when those people realize there are real and substantial things in the world that are far more worthy of their attention.

    And yes, I RTFA.

These are digital Haikus without technique. (Wow, how did this came out from my mind?)

Danny- maybe it came out from your mind by these new things called synapses. Wikipedia just came out with a thing about it.

Yes, I would never hire anyone who wastes time on social networking sites. Better they waste their time on neatorama.
