Happy Birthday, Tomoji Tanabe!

Posted by Miss Cellania in World Records on September 18, 2008 at 11:22 am

Tomoji Tanabe has seen many birthdays. Today he turns 113! Tanabe is the world’s oldest living man, and the eleventh oldest living person in the world. He celebrated at his home in southern Japan with a visit from the mayor.

“I’m happy,” said Tomoji Tanabe as the local mayor presented him with flowers and a giant tea cup glazed with his name and date of birth. “I’m well. I eat a lot,” he added.

Tanabe, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living male last year, eats mostly vegetables and believes the key to longevity is not drinking alcohol.

The former civil servant lives with his son, drinks milk every day and has no major illnesses, although he now writes in his diary only once or twice a month. He used to write on a daily basis.

That man was 50 years old when the second world war ended. Wow! Way to go Mr. Tanabe!

I threw away the key to longevity a long, long time ago.

But alcohol is a preservative, isn't it? (LOL... I'm just kidding. Happy birthday to Mr. Tanabe!)

113 by eating vegetables and no alcohol? BORING.

I'd rather live to 70 and have some fun in my life.

I live in Japan, and my wife is Japanese. She saw an interview with this gentleman during which he outlined his 4 secrets to a long life:

    1) No drinking alcohol
    2) No smoking
    3) Drink milk everyday
    4) Sleep by 8:00 pm and wake up at 5:00 am everyday

I personally am 3 for 4 on this list (yup, I'm a Mormon :-D ) but that schedule is just not happening...

I'm not a Mormon, but I too live in Japan and have a Japanese wife. The natives tend to substitute meat for fish when they get to about forty. I guess the fella doesn't have a mother-in-law...

    Dear, Aaron Ellis
    How are you?
Have you recieved the email that I have sent you recently?
    Please Advise.

    Regarding these 4:

    1) No drinking alcohol
    2) No smoking
    3) Drink milk everyday
    4) Sleep by 8:00 p and wake up at 5:00 am everyday

The 4th one seems to be impossible.
    Maybe some day in future.
    Who knows?.....
