By Miss Cellania in Pictures, Sports on Sep 13, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Over 4,200 athletes from 148 countries are taking part in the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, through September 17th. The Boston Globe has a roundup of great images. Shown is Melissa Stockwell at the Water Cube. She is one of two participating US athletes who lost limbs while serving in Iraq. Link -via Gizmodo

Thank you for sharing this! I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t even heard of the Paralympics before this. As others commented on the Boston Globe website, this has received very little media coverage, and that’s a shame.

It’ll be cool if they become the bionic olympics and they start beating the regular olympic records.

I think it’s kind of insulting that these games aren’t televised. Why wouldn’t there be as many thrills and excitement as in the “regular” Olympics? Personally, I think it would be more amazing to see a handicapped swimmer win a gold medal than some pumped-up “normal” android (or whatever the hell Phelps is). Oh, well.
