Where the Single People Are

Posted by Miss Cellania in Travel & Places on September 12, 2008 at 9:12 am

Maybe you’ve seen the classic map that shows how single women are concentrated on the East coast of the US, and single men outnumber women on the West Coast. Here’s a version you can adjust for age! Of course, if you are a woman my age, you might not want to know…. Link -via Metafilter

I wonder why men and women gravitate toward different coasts? Weird. I can honestly say after living in LA and living in Boston that I like east coast men much better.

I cannot speak for the east coast, but here in the LA/Long Beach/Santa Ana area, the numbers are skewed by immigration. Most of the immigrants are male laborers who come here without a family to earn money and send it back home.

Last year I inadvertently did a study on this subject by joining e-Harmony. I was getting 49 matches a week and the women I contacted were getting 15. This implies that single women (in my area and demographic) out number single men 3:1.

Thanks, bobby! That made my day!

Wow, if you look at the 20-34 group (the attractive age for women) the whole country is just one big sword fight.

(just kidding ladies, you're still hot when you're old...)

    (just kidding again.)

Edward, I think it implies that you don't care about the girl's religious beliefs or circle of friends or status in the community... you just care about some big ol titties so your match filters are a lot less strict than the women's. At least that's how it is for me.

I meet a lot of single people and think to myself, 'there is a good reason why they are single'. This maps tells us where they are concentrated, so if you are looking for love you should probably avoid these 'hotspots.'

Ugh, now that's just depressing. Plenty of 18 year old single guys in my area, but that's just creepy. *becomes a lesbian*

Keep in mind that most gay men congregate in CA and FL.

Good point, Jimbo. I would assume that big blue circle on San Francisco is single (which is not all of them now!) gay men.

There are only two tiny spots on the map with more women in my range.

I might have to set my sights on a silver fox in El Paso. I think the reason single women out number single men in their 50's and 60's is because all the men have died

I was about to say the same thing Senor. I noticed that when I moved the slider all the way over, the country was just a a red bubblefest. Their men kicked it.

For a moment, I thought women horribly outnumbered the guys in El Paso, and I began to get depressed. Then my dumb brain figured out how to use the slider, and I feel a little better. But I think eHarmony may be a good thing to try. It's so hard to find anyone down here.

Hot Damn! Uttles, you have got to give me the URL of the dating site that allows you to filter by breast size, religion and number of friends!

One perky, Wiccan loner to go, please.

Seattle's up there, but as a gay man, I must warn any ladies thinking of moving here that the excess of single men is likely due to the fact that we're the second gayest city in America after SFO. It made my early 20s so much damn fun.

Ha, I put in 20-29 and it just exploded with blue dots. No problem for me!

I would stand in line too for Miss Cellania!
