What is it? Game 74

By Alex in What Is It on Aug 28, 2008 at 7:00 am

Today’s collaboration with the What is it? blog brings us this strange object. Is it a weapon? Or simply a tool? Can you guess what it is for?

Place your guess in the comment section – no prize this week, so you’re playing for fame and glory only. But please post no URL – let others play.

For more clues, check out the What is it? Blog. Good luck, guys!

Update 8/29/08 – the answer is: A corn havester, for cutting corn stalks at the base without bending over, patent number 471,889, a modern version is still sold today. Congratulations to Roscoe who got it right first!

It looks like something you would use for climbing up a tree. Stick the blade in the trunk and use the foothold to support yourself. If not a tree, an electric pole?

Ohhhhhh…. You mean the black thing strapped to his leg… Others have already gotten that; corn cutter. But how many have actually used one or know how they work?

I’s a leg from the 1970s judging from the pale denim flare and cowboy boot combo.

wearing some sort of surgical caliper.

This was obviously made for creating crop circles.

You people. Don’t you recognize this? Back when Hermes fought the Harpies, he took a bad hit to the leg, and lost one of the wings off of his feet. While it was re-growing, Vulcan (or was it Hephaestos?) fashioned him this keen prosthetic leg wing. Worked like a charm. Don’t you people read the news? Sheesh.

I believe it is used to make briar thicket fence row hedges, it that you push down to half cut off the stock and bend it over.

I believe it is a RonCo Ginsu Chopper. It slices, it dices, it makes vegetable chopping a fun family affair!

From Dave: “But how many have actually used one or know how they work?”

You lie down on the ground. Then a fellow farm hand grabs you by both arms and swings you around in a circle while walking up and down the rows of corn. Ta da!

Why so many lonely, unmarried sheepfarmers used it is a mystery. Why would you lock the hindlegs of a pretty sheep in place with such a device?
