Nigerian Man Has 86 Wives

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on August 12, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Take it from Mohammed Bello Abubakar. The 84-year-old Nigerian man will tell you from experience that you shouldn’t have that many wives. How many? 86 to be exact!

Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God.

"A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.

He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer.

"I don’t go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them."

Whoa! First, let me say, that is a lot of wives!

However, slight caveat here; I am not entirely sure how Islamic the guy is by having this many wives. In Islam, polygamy is allowed (provided of course, that you are able to provide for all the needs of all your wives AND you have the consent of your wife(wives?) whom you are already married to). The thing is, the limit is up to four wives, and as far as I know, there are no exceptions to that rule.

I am just saying this in the hopes that no one will misconstrue this case as something widely accepted or allowed in Islam.

Having said that, polygamy is definitely something very FEW men can pull off. The responsibility of a husband to one wife is already quite big.

"I said I couldn't marry an older man, but he said it was directly an order from God," she says.

Is that the new pick-up line for polygamists?

Ezanee, that rule does not apply to a lot of muslims, at least not the ones who are secular.
Just wanted to make that clear

& jeeze, I think this guy has a psychological problem :/

He sounds more like those FLDS and other old school Mormons than Muslim. The whole idea that he is a prophet, that God is the one ordering the marriages, and that he has special powers, gifts and permissions from God sounds just like those polygamous Mormon cults.

I would really like to know where he's getting his money from.

Where does he get his money? Are you serious? The dude probably has hundreds, maybe thousands of supporters who think he's a prophet. Superstition rocks!

86 wives and 170 kids... something tells me (as my grandad would put it!) that his fence has a lot of holes in it...

    Classy guy, my grandad. :D

I thought my grandfather broke the records in West Africa when he claimed he had 30 legal wives...86!!!! I seriously hope no one is gonna try to follow this crazy mans footsteps...

I am not even a Muslim but I know the rule says u have to be able to take care of your wife(s)( read the full story on BBC)..

Of course he is tired.. he is thinking of who to marry next( Miss 87) and trying to run away from the drama at home.

If i were him, I would run and leave everything behind..but I guess not!
