Fish Pedicure

Posted by Alex in Animal, Fashion on July 24, 2008 at 2:09 am

Apparently, fish pedicures (having fish nibble dead skin off your feet) are all the rage in beauty treatment:

Customer Patsy Fisher, 42, of Crofton, Maryland, admitted she was nervous as she prepared for her first fish pedicure. But her apprehension dissolved into laughter after she put her feet in the tank and the fish swarmed to her toes.

"It’s a little ticklish, actually," she said.

Ho said the hot water in which the fish thrive doesn’t support much plant or aquatic life, so they learned to feed on whatever food sources were available — including dead, flaking skin. They leave live skin alone because, without teeth, they can’t bite it off.

I’m not convinced. While I think this would be tickly good fun, I don’t know that I would pay for it when I could find a pond somewhere and then just use a pumice stone to get rid of the dead, flaky skin.

Ewww, Ray. I think I’ll pass. I have a thing about maggots. I can hardly look at them without my stomach turning.

So they starve the fish so they’ll eat anything for beauty? And PeTA isn’t all over this yet?

Evilbeagle is right about the pond thing, although i’ve never left my feet in long enough for them to be munched on. I like how the owner thought it was hilarious that the fished flocked to the crustiest feet when they used communal pools.

I saw this demonstrated on some kind of daytime talk show like “The View,” only that day the fish, literally, weren’t biting.

Not really a new idea if I remember correctly there are many places in Greece, Italy, and Turkey where these sort of fish actually people who have serious skin problems by nibbling at the skin. I think in all those places it was a specialized spa treatment.

We’ve been doing this for years at our summer cottage in Vermont. There are numerous little fish among the tall grass near the shore, and they will surround our feet and begin nibbling if we stay still long enough. It tickles quite a bit. They are so tiny, though, it would take them quite a while to pick off all of the dead skin. I’m sure there are more efficient ways of exfoliating, but perhaps they are not as fun.

This story was on the web last year around this time. I guess some things make the rounds more than once on the internet.

This is not funny or a joke.

The sad end of this addiction is the befaddled people who come to Australia to dangle their legs amongst the crocodiles to get their skin debraded.

Croc’s, while always keen to help, just get carried away.

Gross. I don’t know if I could do this. I have a weird thing about fish touching me. Like if i’m snorkeling and a fish brushes by me, I get grossed out.
