Strange Mating Rituals of the Male Jumping Spider

Check out this mating dance of a male jumping spider (Salticidae) Apparently, if you were a jumping spider, impressing your mate requires tapping, flailing your legs and moaning! Be sure to turn up your speaker, the sound is part of the fun (and watch your cubicle mates pop in to see what's goin' on!)

Oh man. It sounded like the pillars of building groaning from the weight. I think the female spider is a fake since it looks like it's attached to a stick. I think the male spider got angry over that.

Ali: she's just frozen in shock that he can dance so well.
but honestly, that was the coolest thing Ive seen in a while. these critters (jumping spiders) simply fascinate me...in the creepy way that they stalk me when I'm out sitting on my veranda.

I took the kids to see a "Live Bugs from Around the World" show today. The presenter told us to look up jumping spiders on youtube, so I did. He had this big African Millipede that the kids got to touch. It reminded me of a snake with hundreds of squiggly little legs underneath. Bugs and spiders are really interesting. I think I enjoyed the show as much as the kids did.

It was the antenna movements that got me. "You are getting sleepy... despite all the noise I'm making...and you think I'm hot and want to be the mother of my 200 children..."
