Mapping My Day

Posted by Miss Cellania in Arts & Crafts on July 15, 2008 at 11:36 am

One of Victoria Kochowski’s assigments as a senior at the Glasgow School of Art was to map out her day.

At first I was going to make a poster, but decided to just take the piss and make a giant drawing pin and carry it with me on the way to school. It’s made from a giant foam ball that was split in two. It took 3 days to make, but was well worth it! Hope you enjoy it!

Link -Thanks, Vicky!

She decided to take a piss instead of make a poster? Sounds like an odd conundrum.

What a great idea. IMHO, this is what "art" should be: Timely, witty, crafty, sometimes amusing, with just enough social or cultural commentary to make it relevant. Well played.

Boston just did the same thing last week. There's these giant 12-ft tall map pins at some of the tourist traps. The mayor called them 'mappens' cause he can't speak hehe

Ha! I just graduated GSA, and I recognize all the locations except her apartment. Nearly every other GSA student will too. The artsy side of Glasgow is a small town indeed. To Bean -- "take the piss" means to do something in a tongue-in-cheek manner here. It has a great etymology, but I'll leave it to ya'll to discover.

    Hi!

That is a very nice project!

Here is a similar one implemented by Romanian artist Anca Benera one year ago.

This work can be seen in the Kiseleff Park in Bucharest, Romania.

    bean

    take THE piss

    not take A piss.

    cultural differences you see.

    Similarly to the phrase

I was pissed (USA to have been angry)

I was pissed (UK to have been drunk).

    Other countries exist.

Also there seems to have been a lot of mentions recently of my home town Glasgow.

And the actual pin part is too narrow.

Thanks Miss C for putting this up!

And thanks to everyone for the comments! (and for clearing up what take the piss means)

Good to see some Glaswegian readers!

    Hi Polx,

your next language explanation is root, rubber and fag.

For extra marks explain the two finger salute, backwards AND forwards.
