The Turtle Man

Oh, Kentucky. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this video clip of Ernie "I try not to smile, ’cause I got my teeth knocked out by a chainsaw" Brown, Jr. AKA Turtle Man.

Here’s a clip of him in action, in a murky pond infested with snapping turtles. Link [embedded Youtube clip]

That yell of his put my teeth on edge.

Speaking of teeth, how does he eat a turtle steak?

Well, I suppose if he’s titting around in ponds, it at least keeps him out of the gene pool.

There was an article on this guy recently in “Y’all magazine”, a magazine covering Southern people. While I expect there to be a great deal of pejorative comments here, after all Southerners are a bunch of overall wearing Jed Clampett wannabes, please keep it civil. According to the article in Y’all he is a very honest, kind, and generous man. So when you are making snide little comments about keeping him out of the gene pool, remember he is hard-working (he works as a cooper - a profession with which I’m sure all the super-urbane people that will make fun of him are familiar), kind (he often gives the meat from those turtles to people who would otherwise not have any meat), and humble.

Patrick just took the fun out of belittling the turtle man and southerners. But we still have the French!

Seems a nice enough bloke - but is meat really that expensive in the States, or is there some other reason for catching them?

On the whole, southerners are kind, polite, accepting people. Living in Georgia, I never saw racism as bad as when I visited Illinois.

Southerners get a bad rap on lots of counts, and I for one am ready to see the stereotype change. So people from the south are more likely to hunt, fish, and involve themselves in any event that allows them to go drinking in nature. Isn’t that what this country was founded on? Where would we be, in a historic sense, without the outdoorsmen — the seasoned frontiersmen who settled 99% of America with nothing more than leather pents and a gun?

This guy looks like a hoot n’ a holler. All I kept thinking was that I wanted to spend a day following him around and then try to be his friend. Quarter Confederate, quarter Yankee, half American Indian..hopefully that means he doesn’t give a damn who you are so long as you aren’t a snapping turtle!
