Japanese Game Show "Hole in the Wall" Coming to America

Posted by Alex in Video Clips on June 2, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Forget American Idol … the funniest TV contest is coming to America straight from the King of funny TV shows, Japan. FOX TV is now casting for the American-version of Hole in the Wall.

I have a sneaking feeling that this was on Neatorama already, but what the hey, it’s funny: Hit play or go to Link [YouTube] to see how it’s played – via Pop Omnivore, thanks Marilyn Terrell!

Ha ha that is great! I would watch it but I am sure it would be no where near as good as the Japanese version!

The one where the wall falls down is by far the best!

The American version would require bigger holes to accommodate the fat-assed contestants no doubt.

No one does game shows as fun and wacky as Japan. But leave it to the American studios to always mess things up. Anyone even watch Iron Chef America?

Where some variety of sadomashochism is just a way of life for Japanese game shows (how could we forget the show where a guy is locked in a room for over a year, videoed, forced to eat dog food he's won in a competition and not given any clothes..) I can't imagine this will translate well for an american audience. The translation of RedDwarf caused GrantNaylor to pull the plug and the US version of the office was "so bad I think it gave me cancer".

    Hi!
... the last Saturday TV.Azteca television (Mexico), broadcast a new program called "Cuidado con el muro" (Be careful with the wall). It was funny... and I guess that was the very first american-version of Hole in the Wall.

Japanese game shows have such...pizazz. An American version would try to make it seem dramatic or otherwise ruin it.

Japanese version: reveal wall -> move wall at man -> man jumps -> man is knocked into pool

American version: reveal wall -> move wall at man -> man jumps -> cut to commercial

Yeah, I think we have the Ellen DeGeneres show to thank for this. I think the Japanese contestants in ballgowns and heels really made it, though. I hope it's as great as the original.

American television doesn't know how to do this sort of show. They'll spend half the show doing bio pieces on every contestant, showing their kids at home, etc.
Plus the contestants won't know how to just have fun. They'll take every game way too serious.
And I agree with DOJ...the producers will do crap like that to over-dramatize it.

They have to get more Japanese TV shows over here. They have so much more fun on their's. With snakes and animals and ninjas... c'mon...

Ugg, I just saw commercials for two more Japanese imports. It would be hooray if i had any faith in the networks.
    Simmy, i agree, bios suck.

I've been watching this show on youtube for months now, and I agree, the US networks would screw it up.
