Living Lights: From Fireflies to Glowing Worms

Curious Expedition has a neat post about "living lights," a compendium of bioluminescence or biological sources of lights – from dinoflagellates in Mosquito Bay in Puerto Rico, fireflies, the Sparkling Enope Squid, glowing worms, and many more!

one of the few things i miss about alabama are the summer evening skies alive with lightening bugs.

bioluminescence is fascinating. I love nature shows about squid and cuttlefish. They do the most amazing things.

Inkedgal: I love lightnin' bugs! I used to take my son to Blanco State Park here in Texas, just so we could watch the fireflies. Who needs TV when there's better entertainment to be had at the riverside? (And it's ad-free, too!) :-)

Now that I live in a more arid part of the state, I miss my "evening show". Ah well, there's always camping trips...

i grew up on an island and we were always fascinated by the "glowing waves". i think they were dinoflagelletes too...or maybe it was just some plankton?

The picture of the girl standing in the water looks magical. I want to see this. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to swim, tho.

Aww, fireflies are among my favorite things ever. When even the blasted -bugs- can light up, you just -know- the universe has gotta be pretty darned magical. I'm also THRILLED to learn that synchronously-blinking fireflies have been found in the Congaree Swamp, that's near enough to me that I'll -have- to make a trip out there this summer.

I only wish -I- were bioluminescent, too!
