Seal Death Camp in Russia

Remember the Cat Death Camp in China posted previously on Neatorama? Here’s something along the same line, for baby seals in Arkhangelsk, Russia:

Seal hunting is controversial, and there’s a lot of propaganda coming from both sides. One says that there’s nothing special with it, it’s traditional and profitable, no big deal. The other claims it’s particularly cruel, citing independent studies that show that almost 80% of sealers don’t check if the seal is dead before skinning it, and that half of them get skinned alive. But regardless of where the truth lies, we think most people would minimally agree that the unnecessary suffering of sentient mammals with nervous systems similar to ours is bad, and that people who purchase products made from seals should know what their money buys so they can make an informed choice.

I have no problem with people complaining about seal killing, as long as they spend an equal amount of time fighting against shark killing, whaling, snake killing, coyote killing, etc.

While you’re listing creatures to be defended, why not put human babies on there?

Most of the hypocrites who wail and gnash teeth over a seal being killed for a pair of slippers won’t bat an eye over the wholesale slaughter of the unborn.

It’s just a bit wrong imo.

    *high five* Sean.

Bean - can we add cow killing, bird killing, pig killing (etc.) to the list?

    Sean -
Humans are overpopulating this planet. If anything, we need mass culling to thin the herd. As for why you have such a problem with women menstruating, I’ll let your developmental psychiatrist handle that.

    Jen -
Cows have never been an endangered animal, nor have the sort of birds that people go out of their way to kill. Pigs are famous as a species for destroying whatever environment they inhabit. Go read a book sometime.

Whoa bean, so very deep. Wrong and terribly misguided, but deep.

Maybe, instead of trying to demean me and attempt to dismiss my statement by making outrageous, unbased and downright foolish claims concerning my mental health, you should work on actual debate technique.

The Ad hominem attack is the refuge of the sloppy thinker.

If you truly believe mass culling of humanity is the answer to saving the planet, then why haven’t you had the courage to follow that path to it’s logical conclusion? You and those of your mindset about overpopulation should be leading by example if you truly believe mankind to be such a horrible plague on the face of mother earth.

I think Sean may speak a little above you, so I’ve translated so that you can understand:
You’re a dumbass, go kill your self.

    Hope that helps!

seals are the equivelent of deer in their habitat. they reproduce quickly, eat EVERYTHING, and make good leather goods.

i heard seal meat tastes good when smoked properly.

Why, when people start talking about human population, the first response is always, “So go kill yourself!” The easier solution would be to have fewer babies, but that gets the religious knickers in a knot, I guess.

As far as the original topic goes, I wouldn’t eat seal meat or wear seal fur. I don’t want to deprive people of a way to make a living, either. I just wish they would use more humane methods. In this day and age, there’s really no excuse for skinning a seal while it’s still alive.

    Food. That’s all.
For you to believe in the whole “But regardless of where the truth lies, we think most people would minimally agree that the unnecessary suffering of sentient mammals with nervous systems similar to ours is bad” scheme is ridiculous.

If you ever get hungry for real, tell me then whether you have any political views or not. When you get hungry, it’s just a matter of survival. You get hungry, you hunt, you eat. End of story.
Seal hunting and skinning is a part of their culture - there is nothing wrong.
