One Log House

By Alex in Architecture, Home & Garden, Pictures on Mar 7, 2008 at 1:25 pm

The Famous One Log House is a one-bedroom house hollowed out from a single log that came from a 2,100-year old redwood tree:

After felling this 13 foot diameter forest giant, Art Schmock and a helper needed 8 months of hard labor to hollow out the log into a room 7 ft. high and 32 ft. long, weighing about 42 tons.

i was going to rant about this, but it seems to have been felled and hollowed out sometime during WW2, when the attitude to these thing was perhaps a little different. i still find the idea of cutting down a 2100 year old tree pretty sick though…

There is another of these that travels to state fairs. I have to go in every ear and marvel at the carved out couch and other features. The pitch you get is that it was created as a way to bring attention to the wonder of these trees. Maybe not as innocent when it was actually done, but still I love the log house.

I don’t even want to think about people cutting down a 2100 year old tree for ANY reason, much less for a stupid house. It makes me want to cry.

Nothing’s classier than a huge sign on the side of your house.
