Indonesians to Spray Train Roof Riders

Posted by Alex in Car & Vehicle, Crime & Law on February 10, 2008 at 3:51 pm

After failing to discourage people from riding the train on its roof, Indonesian authorities have developed a new tactic: spray ‘em with color liquids!

Indonesian commuters riding on the roofs of trains will be sprayed with coloured liquid so that security officers can identify and arrest them, a report said on Saturday.

"We will confiscate their IDs and give them a ticket," Kereta Api regional spokesman Akhmad Sujadi was quoted as saying.

"We will send a copy of the ticket to their family, their local neighbourhood unit head, their employer, or, if they’re students, their headmasters," added Sujadi, who described the move as "unique".

Mmmm, reminds me of the big bad old days of apartheid in South Africa where activists protesting the evil National Party regime were sprayed with purple dye so they could be easily identified and arrested - the activists responded by printing up a batch of t-shirts that afternoon that read "The Purple Shall Govern."

they used to do something similar to this at illegal raves in the uk back in the late eighties/ early nineties.

these would often be held in either barns or disused industrial units and once the police turned up to raid the party, the entrances would be barracaded by enthusiastic ravers , the police would spray cans of spray paint through the gaps in the doors so that once inside anyone with spray paint on them was the first down (crack on the head with a truncheon)

    ahhh.....happy days

similar problem occurred in the philippines with the PNR (Phil. National Railways) trains; i.e., hitchhikers on the train roof. PNR solved this with a sloping roof design (like a gabled roof on houses). ugly, but it worked.

Do they ride on the roofs of the trains because it's too hot inside or because they don't like to sit down?

Maybe there is no room inside, packed like cattle in too few trains.

I guess it's cheaper to spray them with paint than to add more train. Damn people who want to commute! How dare they?!?

They ride on the roofs because it's crowded, and they're probably skipping out on paying.
Jagged glass on top would also help.

there're easier solutions that that. think of where else the paint will go, all over the train and it's windows, and all over the ground. this isn't a very creative solution.

The same here in Brazil, this is a common occurrence in trains. The photo just looked like central do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro! :o D
