Mouse Party: What Drugs Are Doing To Your Brain

Posted by Alex in Medicine on January 31, 2008 at 8:37 pm

What happens to your brain when you take drugs? University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Center invites you to find out, by using some party lovin’ mice!

The university’s interactive Flash feature, called Mouse Party, gives you a glimpse into the chemical interactions at the synaptic level that cause drug users to feel "high."

This was cool, a little complicated for me though. I think I got the gist of it: drugs = BAD

Cute. Neurobiologically accurate. They even differentiated between channels and G-protein linked receptor proteins. It does support the theory that lab people have very strange ways of expressing creativity.

This video makes me wish that I knew what dopamine and seratonin was... I barely can remember what a synapse is.
And is it wrong that I want to adopt one of those mice?

Fun, but I wish they had gone into a bit more detail, they only cover a few different facts about each receptor.

I also wish they'd done caffeine.

If I had known that drugged up mice have little parties and rock out to music like that, I would definitely have lived my teen years differently.

Wow, this is a really cool, entertaining and most importantly educating flash. I do hope they do a flash about common drugs like caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes.

That's one way to make drugs really boring.
