The Air Car

By Robert Birming in Auto & Transportation on Jan 21, 2008 at 8:57 am

This retro-futuristic “air car” is now up for sale at eBay. Current bid: US $10,000.00.

This car was built in 1985. Body is built with fiberglass and urethane composite making it very light. Entire body can be lifted off with 2 people for easy access to frame and all other parts. Powered by 400 cubic inch Chevy small block, driving through a 2 to 1 reduction drive to a six blade, 54″ propeller. As the propeller tips approach mach 1, she is extremely loud.

But why? Delivering motive force via a propeller is a stupid way to move a car. Aircraft do it because tires don’t grip air too well. Land-based vehicles are not so constrained. Dumb.

Yeh, but it works a bit more efficiently if you’re being tail-gaited by a Mack truck.
