Star Murals by Rip Read

Rip Read is a star painter, or "startist" as he calls himself. Specifically, he paints stars and galaxies on the ceiling.

Rip uses phosphorescent pigments (that glow for up to 25 hours) to create his artwork. Though I haven’t seen it in person, he assured me that his stars not only glow, they also twinkle and shimmer – just like the actual stars in a night’s sky – due to a clever layering technique to create an illusion of depth and movement.

Note: Yes, the photos on his website are photoshopped – I’ve had an email
conversation with him regarding "night" photography and Rip said that he’d tried everything (using all sorts of low lux cameras) but nothing had managed to capture his "stars" just right.

I knew a friend in las vegas that did this stuff with his brother. They would take an actual picture of the night and then paint it on the ceiling. It's really cool to see.

My brother did this with his dorm room about 30 years ago. It is a pity that he went to get his PhD and now has tenure. If he kept with the startist thing, he might have a real career by now.

You can actually take images of the types of paintings unfortunately when a guy like you photshops them it makes this business out to be a con, how can one minute you see a FAN and the next its gone..This is a frofessional industry just like Faux Painters worldwide. the true skill is the finished product. I have used this paint for the last 10 years and taken hundreds of pictures.

I agree with skylighter. If you can't put up photos of actual star murals that you've personally created you shouldn't con people by superimposing images onto room ceilings!
