Rednecks Built a Spider Mech!

By Alex in Video Clips on Dec 14, 2007 at 4:17 am

I hope this ain’t fake, because it is soooo awesome! These guys created an 8-legged, gas-powered spider mech "because they could!"

A: Three months to design … six months to build. $15,000 budget and probably 3 times that in man hour….
Q: Why did you do this?
A: It was art … we did it because we could.
Q: Does a history of mental illness run in your family?

Hit play or go to Link [YouTube] – Thanks wade7!

Update 12/13/07: It’s called the Mondo Spider, created by Charlie Brinson, Dillard Brinson, Alex Mossman, Leigh Christie and Jonathan Tippett – Thanks Anonymous!

Neat stuff from the NeatoShop:

I think he said 20 times that in manpower, not 3.

Oh, and he said “is there a history of mental illness in your family?”

My God man!!! Get your ears checked ;)

altough it wouldn’t sound as cool, it would probably move better if it had rubber pads on the feet for grip.

Why do you call him a redneck? Looks like a mechanical genius to me. Very cool!

Same question as William. I didn’t see any rednecks.

Yeah, exactly what indicates to you that these guys are rednecks?

Also, I agree with E.T.Cook’s comments.

If you’re going to blog at least blog correctly.

Very cool. But you’re certainly not gonna sneak up on any giant flies in that thing.

I wonder how it does when you take it off a parking lot. How badly does it tear up turf whilst turning?

C’mon guys don’t you get it?

It’s OK for liberal elite bloggers to call people “Rednecks”.

It looks really cool, I could see it becoming some kind of a crazy war machine. I wonder how much fuel it guzzles…

And guys, don’t criticise, everyone on the ‘net is calling him a redneck. The blogger didn’t make it up.

I think the spider mech from Wild Wild West looks more fun.

As a redneck I appreciate the compliment of being associated with these guys. Now how can I enter this into NASCAR?

seems like a rough ride and very loud

    still, I want one asap

Ah, in my defense it was late at night and I could only turn my speaker ever so slightly as to not wake up the baby. Anyhow, you guys get the idea!

And thank you for the link to the builder’s page, Anonymous!

Rednecks from British Columbia? Probably not too many. I checked out their website and I think I’d paint them techno-hippy-geeks. Everyone needs a label of course, but theirs isn’t redneck.

If anyone does want to see creations of real rednecks, I wholeheartedly endorse “Farm Show Magazine” (www.farmshow.com). Every issue is chock full of crazy things Rufus and Vern welded up from old tractor bits and angleiron out in the barn while they were waiting for the corn to grow. Some of the stuff looks clever and useful, but a lot is truly off the wall. Lots of dangerous devices waiting to rip the arms off the operator or his children. On the link, Farm Show They are now selling a compendium book of past “Made it Myself” ideas for $10. It’s mighty entertainin’ for the buck.

I can’t resist an immediate followup… I need to buy the book myself just to get more info on the “homebuilt field-burner” they have shown on this page:

Definitely a redneck. Did you see the handlebar moustache?

    Dec 15th, 2007 at 2:32 am

redneck or not, the machines will eventually take over, didn’t any of us learn from skynet?

    either way, pretty freakin rad

I agree with jodee-odee. This technotron is clearly after our women. Trust not this metal abomination, even as frickin sweet as it is.

That guy is NOT a redneck. He does not have a redneck accent.

it was the moustache that made him look all rednecky, right?

    Hey Neatorama Commenters,

Jonathan Tippett here, the guy in the video.

If it helps settle the argument, I’m a medical device engineer and a kinetic sculptor with a sense of humor about facial hair. I mostly enjoy throwing people off who don’t know me by donning “social camouflage” to play with poeple’s assumptions. Redneck? You’re call.

In response to some other comments:
    1) It needs to slip to turn – rubber feet would not work.
    2) It is not a war machine, it is a giant piece clockwork art.
    3) There is more to come but we need support. If you like having amazing things to view and comment on, you should consider supporting the arts. Check out http://www.eatart.org, that’s where the Spider lives.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan
