World’s Largest Shotgun

Posted by Alex in Weapons & War on October 30, 2007 at 3:25 am

The 10-feet long, 2-in barreled weapon, called the Punt Gun, is the longest shotgun in the world.

In the late 1800s, a hunter could use this gun to sneak up on a raft of sleeping ducks, fire a single shot (which consists of 2 lb of BB pellets) and kill nearly 100 ducks with a single round!

Wow, this thing would be awesome to take out those pesky Passenger Pigeons as well! The damn things are everywhere — blacken the skies with their presence.

ohh… i was thinking Schwerer Gustav big but i suppose that is surely big enough for a shotgun. and 100 ducks? that almost beats my duckhunt record. man, i’d be pretty tired of eating duck after that. wait, what am i talking about? I love duck. Mmmm… 100 roast ducks in duck sauce.

man that is the saddest gun ever.

no one thinks sneaking up on 100 sleeping ducks and slaughtering them all in one single finger jerk is …

i dont know, … fucked up?

It’s hard not to think ‘overcompensation’ when looking at the pic. he he he.

Yep, back in the early 1900s (and prior, of course) the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia and Maryland) used to be home to hundreds of thousands of water fowl. The flocks were so thick that hunters didn’t even have to wait for the ducks, etc. to sleep, just land on the water or marshes. The hunters would then sell the ducks at market or to restaurants.

Once in a while, I still see flocks of small birds (sparrows?) that extend for yards and yards, flying across fields, twisting and turning in a beautiful, seemingly random dance. I have a hard time imagining the sky darkening due to massive flocks flying by. Sure wish I could see it though…
