Dschinghis Khan lives!

Many of us have happy childhood memories of West Germany’s Dschinghis Khan’s* Eurovision performance of their disco hit Moskau. In recent years the video clip has become somewhat of a web phenomenon – and deservedly so. The French automobile manufacturer Renault has recently produced a commercial for their new ECO2 “green” vehicle to air in Spain. It’s great to hear such a cool tune being recycled like this. Es real, Willy! Es real! YouTube via Los mejores anuncios de televisión.

*Were you aware?: Dschinghis Khan is the German spelling for Genghis Khan. It is also how John Kerry pronounced it in his Winter Soldier testimony.

The “German” pronounciation (and John Kerry’s) is actually more correct

The “G” is pronounced somewhere between a D, J, Ch, and Zh.. and the E immediately following is pronounced like “i” in “ship”

A more correct Anglicized spelling would look something like this: Dchzjingus Khan- more correct yes, but far less fear-inspiring ;)

Anyone remember the old Gary Larson cartoon of “Genghis and Sylvia Khan” ?

Ahhh.. the sweet German music and its gutural lyrics… still far from Rammstein though…
