Graffiti went commercial years ago: In the mid-’70s I sold pre-cut stencils reading “VALLEY GO HOME!” to the youthful local rascals in Santa Cruz, CA whose hand-sprayed graffiti was virtually unreadable. Wherever you looked, all of the anti-tourist sentiment was uniformly branded.
Of course, the first miscreant apprehended with a stencil in his hands was blamed for the entire plague of vandalism, but as Margin Gaye said, “Great artists suffer for the people.”
