Amazing Soccer Goal

Posted by Robert Birming in Sports on May 14, 2007 at 11:46 am

This goal was made some week ago in a game between the two Swedish soccer teams Örebro SK and IFK Göteborg. The name of the lucky player who managed do the amazing goal is Andres Vasquez.

For the ones of you who do not understand Swedish, here’s a sum up of what the player says:
-I’m very pleased with the goal.

the name of the trick he did is "Rabòna" . Very fortuitous though...

    Thanks for the info Camillo!

He says in the interview that he got inspired after seeing Maradona doing it, but he'd never seen him score a goal with it.

I thought it was Maradona who scored a goal like that first, but I couldn't find any reference to it (and I don't speak Swedish so I didn't understand the interview) :)

In the interview he says that he's seen Maradona do this as a "inlägg"...hmm what's the English word for this...well, when the player is free to kick the ball away after the referee has blown the whistle for one or another reason. Maybe "Direct Kick" is the right term in English?

He then adds that he has never seen Maradona score a goal with this type of kick.

I'm sorry, but isn't that what was supposed to happen? I like soccer and all, but I'm missing what was special here.

I don't get it, either. He kicked the ball, it went in. Isn't that what he's paid to do?

Now I see why the Simpsons make fun of soccer as a dull sport if that's a "great goal".

Did you see HOW he kicked the ball?

It's like a basketball player shooting the ball through his legs and making a three-pointer.

    Sorry, still not impressed.

I'm sure it's a big thing to soccer people, but it's just "meh" to me.

Further proof that soccer players and fans take themselves WAY too seriously.

My favorite goal ever was made by Dennis Bergkamp in a World Cup match between Holland and Argentina. The beauty of the goal was the passing: the pass came from the opposite side of the field, in a single fluent movement Bergkamp picked it up and scored the winning goal with only minute of play time. The pass was incredibly long yet precise and the finish was even more impressive.

No wonder the Dutch commentator goes completely (and I mean _COMPLETELY_) out of his mind. Great goal and very funny to hear too.
