Before Nickelodeon: Pinwheel.

By Alex in Comics & Cartoons, Film on Mar 16, 2007 at 12:01 pm

Before it was called Nickelodeon [wiki], the TV channel was actually called Pinwheel. Buzznet has the video clip:

Some of you may remember Pinwheel, the children’s television show that aired from 1979-1989 on Nickelodeon. However, did you know that until 1981, Nickelodeon itself was also called Pinwheel?

Pinwheel featured live action segments between humans and puppets as well as animation from around the world. Some of the characters were Plus and Minus, Sal and Smitty and Jake. There were a total of 260 episodes of the show, the largest number of episodes a show has had in Nickelodeon history.

Oh, Pinwheel! That’s where I learned how to make an origami boat!

Wow, haven’t thought about this show in years. Used to watch it all the time, although some of the puppets scared me. Loved Plus and Minus though and their perpetual game of tag (they would tag each other over and over again, saying “Not it” I think).

AD – It was “gotcha last,” if memory serves me correctly. What a flashback!

I have been singing the theme song to my daughter since she was born three years ago! I can’t believe I still remember it after all these years. I use to love watching it.

The French show with the two little kids (one boy, in blue, and one girl in red) was called Chapi Chapo. It was great — I’ve had that theme song in my head for 30 years. Seeing it again almost brings tears. I feel so old now! Where t=did the years go?

You can now catch it on YouTube. My 6 year-old loves it now too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, TomorrowPerson. I know that your post is 2 years old, but your post and link has helped me so much. I watched Pinwheel and never knew the name of that short and I to have been singing that song for 30 years. I will now start showing it to my 4 year old nephew:)
