The Ikea Tabletop Guitar.

Posted by Alex in Music on February 21, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Alex of Zachary Handcrafted Guitars built this custom piece using a $15 Ikea tabletop!

This is one of the most interesting guitars I ever built and it is also one of the best.

The action is great, the tone is unbelievable, the neck is super fast, tuning stability is as good as it gets. In short, everything just worked out great on this guitar. This amazingly figured top is from Ikea Furnishings. I bought one of their unfinished end tables for $15 and I can get three guitar tops from it. What a shame that they would use such amazing "tone-wood" for their cheap furniture. Its a sacrilege.

While it is neat that this guy made a decent guitar out of a tabletop, laminated pine is NOT a tone-wood, plus, in a solid body guitar as he built, wood has only a slight effect on tone - it has more to do with quality hardware, pickups and strings that the wood.

Pine isn't the most stable wood either, it might be interesting how well this guitar plays after a seasonal change or in a humid environment.

yep, and i kinda doubt the neck is made of the same pine, so claiming the
'action' is great really has more to do with what he added to the
'placeholder' solid body. He coulda used solid plastic for the same effect...

Sadly, the guy who built this guitar seems to be a jerk. He won't sell you a guitar if you don't deserve it, he won't sell to handicapped folks, or to anyone but competent players.
