Hydropolis: The World's First Luxury Underwater Hotel in Dubai.

Posted by Alex in Architecture, Pictures, Travel & Places on January 2, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Dubai is building the world’s first luxury underwater hotel called Hydropolis:

"Hydropolis is not a project; it’s a passion," enthuses Joachim Hauser, the developer and designer of the hotel. His futuristic vision is about to take shape 20m below the surface of the Arabian Gulf, just off the Jumeirah Beach coastline in Dubai. The £300 million, 220-suite hotel is due to open at the end of 2007 and will incorporate a host of innovations that will take it far beyond the original blueprint for an underwater complex worthy of Jules Verne.

The design of the hotel is rather, um...phallic if I do say so. It even has emissions from the correct spot.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks like a dildo? Seriously, squint your eyes and, well...

If it's happening in Dubai, it doesn't surprise me. They're resculpting the shoreline to look like date palms and maps of the world, and planting weird skyscrapers everywhere. In less than ten years the city has literally been transformed from a sunburnt desert oasis into a sort of global superVegas!

    Here, take a look:

This is old news, and out of date.

This project was put on hold mid 2006.

Will not be opening in 2007. No new date has been given.
