Can Big Brother Hear Me Now?

Surprise! The government can listen to everything you say, even when your cell phone is turned off:

A recent court ruling in a case against the Genovese crime family revealed that the FBI has the ability from a remote location to activate a cell phone and turn its microphone into a listening device that transmits to an FBI listening post, a method known as a "roving bug." Experts say the only way to defeat it is to remove the cell phone battery.

"The FBI can access cell phones and modify them remotely without ever having to physically handle them," James Atkinson, a counterintelligence security consultant, told ABC News. "Any recently manufactured cell phone has a built-in tracking device, which can allow eavesdroppers to pinpoint someone’s location to within just a few feet," he added.

hogwash. I don't buy it as it doesn't very well jive with the way cellphone operate. Only way is to remove the battery? What about turning it off? These are the same people who believe your computer can be hacked into over the power lines even when it is off - so long as it is plugged in. Remember THAT scare? Give me a break.

Sam, keep in mind that even though you turn the main device off, parts can still continue to run wihtout it. Same goes for computers that have been turned off but have a LAN boot enabled so you can boot them up remotely by sending a command to it. Same process can be EASILY applied to any cellphone if someone would want to.

I highly doubt the cellphone manufacturers would allow such a thing though.

'James Atkinson, a counterintelligence security consultant, told ABC News.'

The term counterintelligence is the key here :)

In a nutshell, it means to supply false intelligence or to discredit real intelligence.
