The rare photos taken by Russian pilot Letchik Leha for the Moscow city Ostankino Tower [wiki] which stands above the clouds are really fantastic!

Standing 1772 feet (540 metres) tall, it was the tallest free-standing structure in the whole world until in 2003 there was build another one, taller, in Canada. Still it is the tallest alone standing structure in Europe and Asia.

Update: A link to Ostankino Tower on Wikipedia was added, after Neatorama reader Mike pointed out the quoted description (in Italics) may not be accurate.

    The description is very off.

The CN Tower in Toronto has been the tallest free standing structure in the world since it was built more than thirty years ago.

The Ostankino Tower was the highest from 1967 until 1975.

ummmmm…. that’s not a russian tower… I’m pretty sure that must be a typo…. clearly that’s Cloud City far above the planet Bespin… You really need to do some fact checking next time…

Yup, the CN Tower’s been around a lot longer than 2003. And it’s only the tallest free-standing one. There are some taller towers now, but they need help to stand, somehow.
