Zune Vs. iPod.

By Alex in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on Nov 15, 2006 at 4:12 pm

This pic by flickr user axb500 cleverly uses characters from the Mac ads (btw, Justin Long, the Mac guy, is reportedly fired nope, still workin’) to compare Microsoft’s Zune to Apple’s iPod. Now, the web is abuzz with comparison between the two (see for example, Gizmodo’s excellent review).

Not having either (I’m technologically-challenged – heck, my music player of choice is a radio!), can anyone tell me which is better from personal experience?

I can only speak about iPods as I haven’t tried the Zune. there is however an interesting article on installing the Zune software here: http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/13/installing-the-zune-sucked/

As for the iPod it was the very first Apple product I ever owned. In short – I immediately began buying other apple products. Their stuff just seems to work straight out of the box without issue.

No one ever mentions that the PC is played by John Hodgman, the hilarious author of “Areas of my Expertise”, a Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show and a regular contributor to This American Life.

And if you can’t tell, I have a little nerdy crush on him.

As someone who has used Windows 90% of his life and utterly resents Mac fanboyism, I can say with deep conviction that the Zune is a a Piece of shit. It puts one new feature on the table (WiFi), and utterly cripples it (3-play DRM). Beyond that, it doesn’t work with music purchased on iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, or any other music business beyond the Microsoft-sanctioned Urge.

Plus, the fact that MS pays a tax to Universal for every player sold (a “sin tax” to make up for supposed losses due to piracy) royally pissed me off.

Hmm as for the fired part of the artice: the referenced news article is date the 8th of nove. Justin Long posted an update to his blog on his website on the 13th disabusing people of the idea that he had quit or is no longer doing the ads.

    Someone should get their shitstraight.

    iPod: yes. Mac: NO!

Personally, prefer anything by Archos. The featureset on the Archos players (PVR, USB OTG Host, etc.) make them much more useful than just a regular video player.

Confirmed my fears. I think I’d stick with radio (or Internet radio) for now. Plus it’s free!

I’ve been a customer of Creative so far, and I’m content.

I have had my zune for almost 3 or 4 years now and it still works like a champ. All I ever hear is how my friends ipods always break from not even touching them or because they got to old. I have dropped my zune many times and it is still great. Never had a problem with it.
