As someone who paid almost half a year's salary for my wedding, I am appalled by the bride's reaction. A gift bag of groceries may not be "high society" but it was your decision to have an expensive dinner/reception. My brother, who got hitched when he was still in college, couldn't afford a reception and just treated his guests to a simple buffet at a restaurant. Of course I had the hindsight to plan for my wedding when I am somewhat secured financially.
I didn't expect my guests to pay for my reception and I appreciated what was given to me. In fact, I'm still using the $25 electric fan one of them gave me. It is a sad state of affairs when we look a gift horse in the mouth, right Matt?
Interesting analysis but probably wrong. Movies are typically written by humanities grads, and they know more about storytelling than anything science-related. In a typical movie (or TV episode), they get the science wrong, they get psychology wrong, they get the technology wrong, they get "computer hacking" wrong, they perpetuate long-discredited pseudoscience and quackery, they usually make the scientist/engineer/mathematician to be less than honorable, and they have a very negative and ill-informed view of geek culture.
Even a supposedly "pro-science" show like CSI suffers from a lot of the problems I listed above. There is no grand conspiracy to attack engineers or scientists. It's that TV and movie writers don't know any better and they don't care. "The truth should never get in the way of a good story."
If I wanted big chicken tenders, I'd buy one. But I prefer chicken parts with skin and bones. Screw those millennials, let them eat elsewhere. I hope that this stupid idea would go the way of Cherry Coke.
Intriguing yet unconvincing. There is no clear break between "old English" and middle English in the historical record. There are Scandinavian influences, yes, but if you look closely to the geolinguistic map of England, most Scandinavian influences are regional and are centered on areas with historically Nordic settlements. Yes, the Norsemen may have influenced the development of English, but to say that modern English is just Norse with some old English is bit of a stretch.
Stand your ground is only controversial if you believe that people should always give in to bullying and violence, especially women. Otherwise it's nothing more than a codification of common sense and personal rights.
