From what I've read about the M.D.S. Robots is that they are being created to be used as helper robots (very much like those being developed in Japan) for the elderly, lab work, and AI development, as well, as other applications.
Well, it is a pre-recorded speech sample used. If ever robots would talk they would probably use a speech synthesizer much like the ones used in computers.
As I've always believed zoos are ok as long as the animals are kept happy, healthy, and socialized with members of their own species to keep them sane. This activity like Fritz has pointed out looks very much like self-comforting behavior or a form of self entertainment from boredom. Get it a friend!
I've been trying to learn sign language for awhile. I've always considered it useful as I have one friend who is deaf and one who has a brother who is deaf.
I think it's funny but also a bit sad. If we want to help people understand the Internet and technology based jargon we should laugh at first and then explain. That's what I've done with my parents who had a hard time figuring out how to use the Internet and how to use the computer...now after 3 years they are pretty well able to do anything they want after a bit of coaching from me and my siblings. :)
