Researchers Built Carna Botnet to Perform Internet Census

How big is the Internet? Two years ago, the anonymous researcher behind the Carna botnet joked around that they should try the classic telnet login with default root username and password on random IP addresses. They gave it a whirl, and in a short period of time, found thousands of unprotected device on the Net.

But to scan the entire Internet would require a botnet, so they built one.

Curt Hopkins of The Daily Dot wrote:

Carna turned out to be an effective way of measuring a big chunk of the Internet, but there’s one major catch: It’s illegal and invasive, which no doubt explains why the researcher has remained anonymous. Carna was, as per the name, a botnet, a type of malware secretly loaded into any device it could penetrate. At its peak, the botnet controlled an estimated 420,000 devices.

“We used the devices as a tool to work at the Internet scale,” wrote the Carna author. “We did this in the least invasive way possible and with the maximum respect to the privacy of the regular device users.”

Although Carna was allegedly designed to minimize intrusion and avoid damaging an infected device or process, it remains a virus that a hacker used to infect millions of devices with no notice and no permission.

Step Into The Oceanic Twilight Zone

Step into the Twilight Zone. The disphotic zone of the ocean, that is. The oceanic Twilight Zone, which starts about at 600 feet deep and extends to about 3,300 feet, is called that because only a small amount of light penetrate the water at this level. Plants do not grow here, but strange animals are abound, as this fantastic video clip by the BBC's Nature Microworlds show:

Albert Einstein Optical Illusion

As far as optical illusions, this one is pretty nifty: Stephen Fry of the QI shows us how we can't help but see the back side of Einstein's hollow face as the front. It's hardwired in our brains.

$3 Bowl Found in a Garage Sale Sold at Auction for $2.2 Million

Talk about a garage sale find! A New York family picked up a Chinese bowl at a garage sale for $3 and found out that it's actually a 1,000-year-old treasure worth $2.2 million:

The bowl — ceramic, 5 inches in diameter and with a saw-tooth pattern etched around the outside — went to a London dealer, Giuseppe Eskenazi, at Sotheby’s auction house in New York on Tuesday.

Sotheby’s said the bowl was from the Northern Song Dynasty, which ruled China from 960 to 1127 and is known for its cultural and artistic advances.

The auction house said the only other known bowl of similar size and design has been in the collection of the British Museum for more than 60 years.

I know what I'll be doing this weekend: bowl huntin'! NBC News has the story: Link [Warning: auto-starting video]

Animal Skull Wedding Cake

Food artist Annabel de Vetten of Conjurer's Kitchen (previously on Neatorama) created this animal skull-themed wedding cake for the Eclectic Wedding Extravaganza in Birmingham, England.

From Cakehead:

It features solid chocolate skulls of 16 carrion crows, 12 domestic kittens, 3 Vervet monkeys, and 4 barn owls, all of which the artist sculpted by hand. Made from White Chocolate Mudcake, the cake took her over 100 hours to complete in total. There are two options of toppers: a chocolate conjoined kitten skull, or dried flowers from an actual wedding bouquet

The Guardians of Time

These mysterious hooded creatures are the Guardians of Time, a sculpture by Austrian artist Manfred Kielnhofer. The life-size sculptures look great during the day, but at night ... that's when they're truly stunning.

Scientists Confirm The Universe is Old, Perfect, and Evil

Image: ESA-Planck

A four-year mission conducted by the European Space Agency's Planck spacecraft created the highest-resolution map yet of the entire cosmic microwave background radiation, the radiation left over from the Big Bang.

"It might look like a dirty rugby ball or a piece of modern art, but I can assure you cosmologists would have hacked our computers or given up their children to get a copy of this map," said George Efstathiou at a press conference at ESA headquarters in Paris, France, this morning.

One of the things the Planck mission confirmed was the presence of the Axis of Evil, an unexplained alignment of cold and hot spots in the cosmic microwave background:

... Planck's map has also confirmed the presence of a mysterious alignment of the universe. The "axis of evil" was identified by Planck's predecessor, NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP).

The pattern of hot and cold variations in the CMB should be randomly distributed – and they are when comparing small patches of the universe. At larger scales, however, Planck reveals that one half of the universe has bigger variations than the other. Planck's detectors are over 10 times more sensitive and have about 2.5 times the angular resolution of WMAP's, giving cosmologists a much better look at this alignment. "We can be extremely confident that these anomalies are not caused by galactic emissions and not caused by instrumental effects, because our two instruments see very similar features," said Efstathiou.

Planck has also confirmed WMAP's detection of a large unexplained cold spot in the CMB, which some cosmologists took as a sign that there are universes beyond our own. One model of inflation, called eternal inflation, suggests that new universes are continually popping into existence and expanding. This expansion could cause another universe to collide with ours, creating a "bruise" that would show up as a cold spot in the sky.

Pro-Wrestler Saved Mom from Burning House by Tearing a Tree Out of the Ground WITH HIS BARE HANDS

Pro-wrestler Chris "The Masterpiece" Masters is used to fighting in the ring as a villain, but when his uncle called and said that his mom's neighbor had gone crazy inside her house, Chris went into (real) hero mode:

When Chris showed up, the neighbor was shouting through the front door that he would burn the place down if anyone tried to gain entry.

Chris says he tried talking sense into the guy, but he wasn't having it -- so Chris called the cops ... but when they showed up, the neighbor set the house on fire.

Chris jumped into hero mode -- tearing a tree out of the ground and tossing it through a window.

Chris reached through the window and removed his mom from the inferno ... at which point police rushed in and arrested the neighbor on arson charges.

He uprooted a tree WITH HIS BARE HANDS! How nifty is that? Link (Photo: Wikimedia)
