Growing Up Blind

(YouTube link)

Tommy Edison (previously at Neatorama) tells us about his childhood as the only blind kid in his family and in school. He can't really give us a comparison because he has been blind since birth, and putting himself into a sighted person's shoes is even more difficult than putting ourselves into his. But Edison does have some funny stories arising from his parents' insistence that he have the same experiences as their other children, such as riding a bicycle.  -via Viral Viral Videos

Heroic Bus Driver Saves Woman from Jumping off Bridge

(Video Link)

Darnell Barton drives a bus in Buffalo, New York. On October 18, he was driving about 20 high school students on an overpass over an expressway when he saw a woman standing on the other side of the guardrail.

You can see footage of the encounter in the video above. Mr. Barton stopped the bus, opened the door and asked if she needed help. Then he got out and hugged her. He asked if she wanted to come back over the guardrail. She said yes and Mr. Barton helped her across.

A few minutes later, an ambulance arrived to take the woman away. Mr. Barton then went back to work, but not without recognition for what he had done:

When the ambulance drove away, Barton got back on his bus — and received a standing ovation from the high school students and other passengers who'd been watching through the windows. He finished his route, wrote up a report and went home.

"Being the humble individual that Darnell is, he didn't write it in a way that was going to call attention to himself," said C. Douglas Hartmayer, spokesman for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. "It was: I did it, got back on my bus and continued. That speaks volumes about his demeanor and character."

Pope Francis and the Little Child

Pope Francis addressed families in St. Peter Square at the Vatican last Saturday. There's a video of the event, but it is four hours long. One of the highlights was a little boy who became attached to the pope, and came to stand beside him on stage. When some cardinals tried to remove him, the pontiff allowed the child to stay. The charming sequence is captured in a series of gifs and photographs at Buzzfeed

Emotional Baby

(YouTube link)

Adorable ten-month-old Mary Lynne Leroux listens to her mother Amanda sing a sad song. First she smiles, then the tears come. It's ridiculous to think that the child is reacting to the lyrics, but the effect is both eerie and cute.

I know the feeling, My kids always cried when I sang to them. It didn't matter what kind of song it was, either. Now they just leave the room or beg me to stop. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Iivari the Otter

(YouTube link)

A man in Finland made friends with a wild otter, using the one thing the otter really wants -food! The otter will even come into the house long enough to grab a fish, although he prefers to eat it outside, alone. The guy's lovely deep voice summons the otter from the water even when it's covered with ice. By the end of the video, Iiveri is even talking back to him!  -via Tastefully Offensive

Elephant Family Reunion

(YouTube link)

A baby elephants runs faster when he recognizes his father (or is it some other relative?) coming toward him. The whole family looks lovely together. The tender moment was recorded at Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa. -via Daily Picks and Flicks
