Snow Day at the Oregon Zoo

If you look really hard at the screenshot above, you will see the proverbial polar bear in a snowstorm. The Oregon Zoo in Portland was closed to the public yesterday (and today) due to deep snow. But zookeepers let us take a peek anyway, by recording some video of the animals playing outside.

Some critters stayed in their dens, while polar bears, otters, seals, and even elephants had to explore and frolic in the snow.  -via reddit

The Salmon Mousse - Darling, You Didn't Use Canned Salmon

The Salmon Mousse by Stationjack

Souls who have left their physical bodies should feel lucky to still have any experiences at all, since many of them are stuck in the pitch black limbo of their own post-mortem minds. But some souls have yet to realize they're actually dead, so they sit there arguing with Death like a silly person until the surety of their demise finally sinks in. This is one of the reasons why humans can't seem to figure out the meaning of life, because they're about as familiar with the feeling of being alive as a python is with the feeling of having arms!

Add a cold, bony touch of classic comedy to your geeky wardrobe with this The Salmon Mousse t-shirt by Stationjack, it's the perfect way to show love for the Monty Python crew without slapping people in the face with a fish!

R.I.P. George Michael

George Michael, British pop star and half of the duo known as Wham! died Sunday at his home in Goring in Oxfordshire, England. Police were called to the residence at two in the afternoon, and noted his death as "Unexplained, but not suspicious."

Mr. Michael was one of pop’s reigning stars in the 1980s and 1990s — first as a handsome, smiling, teenypop idol making lighthearted singles like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” with Wham!, then arriving as a grown-up pop sex symbol with his 1987 album “Faith.”

But Mr. Michael grew increasingly uncomfortable with the superficiality and relentless promotion of 1980s-style pop stardom. He turned away from video clips and live shows; he set out to make more mature statements in his songs, though he never completely abandoned singing about love and desire. Mr. Michael wrote supple ballads, like “Careless Whisper” and “Father Figure,” as well as buoyant dance tracks like “Freedom ’90” and “I Want Your Sex.” For much of his career, including his best-selling albums “Faith” and “Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1,” he was also his own producer and studio backup band. Much of his music drew on R&B, old and new, but his melodic gift extended across genres.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael's manager Michael Lippman said the cause of death was heart failure. Michael was 53.

Do Tortoises Like To Be Touched?

Tortoises use their tough skin and even tougher shells as tools for survival, and their hard exteriors tend to make people assume the tortoise inside the shell isn't a warm and tender creature.

But as reptile biologist Matt Evans of the Smithsonian National Zoo Reptile Discovery Center demonstrates in this video tortoises genuinely enjoy physical contact, and they'll even try to return the favor in their own clumsy way:

Tortoises enjoy tactile sensations; rubbing, scratching, that kind of thing. So when we go in there with them and we’re engaging with them – we’ll kind of rub their shell, scratch their head a bit and when we do that, they extend that neck out and they’ll look like they’re enjoying it a little bit and that’s just something we do to interact with the tortoises on a daily basis.

And in case you also happen to be wondering what a tortoise's diet consists of here's another video made by Matt Evans that explains what goes in to a tortoise salad.

Drone & Tigers

How do you get closeup shots of beautiful tigers in the snow? You use a drone, of course! Filmmaker David Etienne Durivage sent a camera drone (or two) in to record the tigers of Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Félicien in Quebec as they played in deep snow.

(YouTube link)

However, cats are cats, and when these guys saw the drones, it awakened their curiosity and predatory instincts. "Could this be a delicious bird? Maybe not, it's pretty scrawny, but we'd better keep an eye on it anyway." That drone had better stay a safe distance, because tigers can leap great heights, even in snow. -via Tastefully Offensive

This Chrome Extension Turns Any Picture of Trump Into A Kitten

I don't know about you guys, but I couldn't be more tired of hearing about Trump and everything else related to the post-election nightmare. One thing that can help ease the pain caused by politics is a picture of a cute kitty. That's why we love Make America Kittens Again, a Chrome extension replaces pictures from articles with the word "Trump" in the headline to show kitty pictures.

Personally, I'd rather have one that includes the words "election, Clinton, Kanye, Kardashians or Taylor Swift" all be replaced with kitty pictures, but I'll take what I can get. You can download the extension here.

Repo Man Took Car, Paid It Off, Returned It

Stanford Kipping of Red Bud, Illinois, and his wife Patty were paying off their 1998 Buick at $95 dollars a month. But a sharp rise in the cost of prescription drugs left the elderly couple unable to make those payments. Jim Ford's company was contracted to repossess the vehicle. Ford tried to work out a deal with the bank to allow the couple to keep their car, but that didn't work, so he had to take it. But the task bothered him. Ford decided to take matters into his own hands.

Using the online service “GoFundMe” and depending on his friends in the repo business, Ford said he raised more than $3,500 in one night. After the fee for the service and after paying the $2,501 to the bank owed on the Buick, Ford tucked $1,000 in cash into an envelope. A co-worker at his business bought a frozen Thanksgiving turkey and Ford put it in the cab of his tow truck.

On Monday, he and Tom Williams, a friend, fixed the Buick’s headlights, topped off the radiator and changed the engine oil. Then they hooked the car up for a return trip.

The Kippings were aware of the car recovery efforts, but were astonished at the extra help. It was a wonderful effort on the part of Ford, his friends and colleagues, and those who donated online. Still, for the life of me, I can't figure out why a 1998 Buick would cost that much. Read the entire story at The Belleville News-Democrat. -Thanks, John Farrier!

This Elephant Can't Understand Why This Girl Has No Trunk

(Video Link)

When we're little, we tend to think everyone and everything is just like us -until we learn otherwise from experience. This little elephant is going through just such a moment as he tries to understand why this weird human creature doesn't have a proper nose. Elephants rub each other's trunks the same way humans give hugs, so he's trying to show love -he just doesn't quite know how with this weird creature that can't trunk-hug him back.

It Pays to Be Skeptical

You don't have to believe everything you hear. I've gotten to the point where I don't believe anything I hear. Scammers either become very good at what they do, or else they give up scamming. First, they get your attention, then they have a few tricks to find out how gullible you are. If you don't pass the gullibility test, they don't want to waste their time on you. I think this squirrel has hit the jackpot, and it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Or at least he'll get something out of the the guy's snack bag. Witty Wordplay Themed Sketches From Monty Python's Flying Circus

The Monty Python crew are the undisputed masters of witty comedy, and comedy fans who can't live on slapstick or stand up alone find sketches from Monty Python's Flying Circus to be a feast for the senses.

(YouTube Link)

Our eyeballs get to watch all sorts of silly stuff take place on the screen, like silly walks and cross-dressing mounties, but our ears are the real winners because they got to hear all the classic lines that made comedy history.

(YouTube Link)

Sketches featuring the man who speaks in anagrams, the man who says things in a very roundabout way and the Woody family were crafted to appeal to fans of wordplay.

And after watching them a few times the lines will get stuck in your head and turn your mind into a flying circus of linguistic fun!

A Modern Sisyphus

It's a windy day. The garbage can blew away, and mom and dad sent their son to get it and bring it home. But it's still windy, so that's not an easy job. But he keeps at it, no matter how difficult his task is made.

Sisyphus was condemned to roll a rock up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, for eternity. I hope this child is not still out there trying to bring the garbage can home. -via Metafilter

Cat Gets Stuck Under Another Cat

(YouTube link)

When a cat wants to plop down, he doesn't really care what's underneath him, even if it's another cat. This cat got distracted by something outside the window and just dug in his place to watch. The cat that was already laying there had a mighty struggle to free himself! Sure, we allowed cats in our homes for pest control purposes, but we keep them for their entertainment value. -via Tastefully Offensive

1941 Haka

The Māori Battalion fought in Greece, Italy, and North Africa during World War II. Here they are performing a Haka for George II, the King of Greece, who was living in Egypt in 1941 after his country fell to the Nazis.

In total, almost 3,600 men served overseas with the Māori Battalion between 1940 and 1945. Of these, 649 were killed in action or died on active service – more than 10% of the 6,068 New Zealanders who lost their lives serving with 2NZEF in the Middle East and Europe. In addition, 1,712 men were wounded and 237 were prisoners of war. In the words of Lieutenant-General Bernard Freyberg, who commanded the 2nd NZ Division: “no infantry battalion had a more distinguished record, or saw more fighting, or, alas, had such heavy casualties as the Maori Battalion”. This sacrifice did not go unnoticed. The unit was among the most highly decorated for individual bravery of all the New Zealand forces.

Pot Brownies

The law firm of Hutson & Harris in Waco, Texas, makes YouTube videos to give people general legal advice. They've found that people respond more if that advice is in the form of a song. This one is about marijuana brownies.

(YouTube link)

See, putting pot in your brownie mix sparks a new violation under Texas law: the entire recipe is considered a controlled substance, so the weight of your brownie mix adds to the crime. A tiny amount of marijuana added to a pound of brownie mix will get you a felony charge. Take their advice, and don't do it in Texas. What you really want to do is check out their other videos, especially the one about medical malpractice lawsuits. Chris Harris stepped into the discussion at reddit to tell us some more about the brownie video.
