Tiny Pony Gets a Periscope to Help Him See out of His Stall

(Photos: Manchester Evening News)

Pedro is a Shetland Pony that lives at the Ebony Horse Club in London. He lives in a stall with a normal-sized stall door. He has to stretch high up to just barely look over the edge at the world outside. So members of the club commissioned a periscope that lets Pedro see at his own height. They call it the Pedroscope.

Print and Cut, a fabrication shop, designed and built the Pedroscope based on a sketch sent in by the club. The Manchester Evening News reports:

Andy Morris, owner of Print and Cut, said: “We got an email from the Ebony Horse Club who were asking for our help, it was so nice, and a little bit funny, that we decided to give it a go."

And being experts in 3D printing, workers at the Stockport company knew a small and relatively easy gesture would mean the world to Pedro.

Andy, 38, said: “The sketch was sent to us and then I turned it into a 3D sketch with some software, and then it was sent to be made. It was all quite easy, and we did it for free to help Pedro.

This Is the Awesomest Fireplace Ever

(Photo: Fritz von der Schulenburg)

The Italian fashion designer Elsa Peretti purchased an old watchtower on the coast of Tuscany as a vacation home. It was called La Torre. The Sixteenth Century structure was built for military purposes, so Peretti had to have it redesigned with comfort in mind. So she hired architect Renzo Mongiardino to renovate it.

Mongiardino took the old fort and turned it into a fairytale castle by covering the walls with three-dimensional images of fantasy scenes, including this stunning fireplace that looks like a giant’s mouth. You can see more photos of the home at The Art of the Room.

Ingenious New Beehive Design Taps Honey without Disturbing the Bees

Stuart and Cedar Anderson are a father and son team of professional beekeepers. They've developed a new type of beehive that they call Flow. The Flow hive is built with partially formed cells. When bees take up residence in it, they make use of this pre-existing cell network. With the turn of a spigot, the cells split open, dumping their honey down a channel. There's no need to open the hive and scrape off honey off individual frames. They can fill two large jars of honey very quicky using a Flow hive.

Aircraft Carrier Passes through a Rainbow

The mighty USS John C. Stennis, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier based in Bremerton, Washington, passed through a rainbow in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday morning. For the photographer, Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Ignacio D. Perez, it was a perfect moment. He described the event to CNN:

"As a photographer I am used to documenting operational events like aircraft launches and recoveries," Perez, a 21-year-old mass communications specialist third class, said in an email. "But when I saw the rainbow I was excited because it was different. I knew the odds of the ship passing near another rainbow were pretty slim."

Perez was fortunate he was on the ship's flight deck on another assignment when things began to fall into place.

"I was actually covering the end of a 5K run on the flight deck at the time, but I noticed the rainbow as a fog cloud was breaking and quickly changed my location to ensure I had a better view of the ship passing underneath it," Perez said.

Pac-Man Clock

It's time to rise and shine and chase after those food pellets. Eat and don't get caught by the ghosts. That's your job every single day. For eternity.

(Video Link)

If you need a reminder of that, Bob of Making Stuff has a great clock design for you. Bob built this clock showing Pac-Man chasing his undead enemies. This time-lapse video shows the construction process from start to finish. It's run with an Arduino-compatible controller and a servo mounted in a 3D printed bracket.

The body pieces are made very skillfully with a scroll saw. Bob's well-equipped workshop makes me jealous. I need a scroll saw, as cutting off my fingers with my jigsaw takes too much effort.

This Pile of Snow Looks Just Like a Cat

Twitter user @samurai_ball snapped this photo of a snow formation a couple years ago. This cat is far more into winter than even Rudiger the snow cat. Bring him in from the cold!

Woman Delivers Her Own Baby While Pulled Over on the Interstate

A pregnant Salt Lake City woman was dropping off her six-year-old son at her mother's house on Saturday when she felt contractions starting. Devi Mariah Ostler, a thirty-two-year-old mother of two, calmly began driving herself to the hospital. Soon, however, Ostler realized that she wasn't going to make it there before her baby made an appearance.

Once she felt the full force of her labor, Ostler dialed 911; her call was answered by operator Brittney Chugg. Ostler was traveling 75 miles per hour in the fast lane on Interstate 15 when she told Chugg that her water broke. According to the Associated Press, Ostler said,

"I'm trying to get over into the other lane — I need to push! The baby is coming!"

Ostler was able to pull over to the side of the interstate while Chugg talked her through the delivery procedure and Utah Highway Patrol trooper Josh Carr raced to the scene. Only a minute after the officer arrived, Ostler gave birth to a healthy, nearly 10-pound baby boy. Highway noise could be heard on the recording in the background as the newborn was swaddled in a sweatshirt. Officer Carr said of the incident,

"He came right out in my hands. It was very emotional. Probably next to my own children's' birth, it was a very satisfying moment in my career."

Ostler said later at the hospital,

"I knew the baby was coming and it doesn't help to panic. So, I just stayed calm and said, 'Well, if I deliver it on my own then I deliver it on my own. If somebody gets here, somebody gets here. The baby is here. There's not much more I can do about it.'"

Congratulations to such a strong, level-headed lady! Visit this AP article to read more on this story.
