A 1991 Letter About the Solar Eclipse

Grandma Betty saw the solar eclipse in 1991, and regretted that her new grandson was too young to know what it was all about. But she looked up the next solar eclipse that he might see, and wrote a letter about it. Trevor's mom kept the letter until it was time to open it 26 years later, which was this past week. The letter is overflowing with love and pride for her grandson, and with wonder at the marvels of the universe.

In case you're wondering, Grandma Betty is still going strong at age 79. Trevor (redditor davedavedaveck) told us so.

The Shave

Once upon a time I dated a guy who had no chin to speak of. I did not know that for several months after I met him because he had a luxuriant beard. After that, I assumed that any man with a beard was either hiding a weak chin or a double chin underneath, which isn't always so. Still, you love someone for who they are, not what they look like. You'll get used to it in the time it takes for the next beard to grow out. The kids, however, may be traumatized. This is the latest from Lunarbaboon.

Poppoppop

My mother-in-law gave my two-year-old a toy electric guitar for Christmas. All you had to do is touch it to make random heavy metal riffs pierce the air. I was lucky it ran on batteries, because batteries can be removed as soon as Grandma turns her back.

When you have a child, your parents are very likely to shower them with gifts that make noise. You generously consider that maybe they don't know any better. In most families, you would be mistaken. They know full well what they are doing, and it is part of their revenge for the grief you caused them when you were a kid. This is the latest from Lunarbaboon.

Awesome Fan Art Offers A Detailed Look At Finn And Jake's Tree Fort

Adventure Time takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, and yet the heroes Finn and Jake don't live like wastelanders- they live in a sweet Tree Fort with many of the amenities of a modern home.

They've got a BMO that plays movies and games, a full kitchen, a fireplace to keep the Fort warm when the Ice King puts a chill in the air, a really cool elevator and a few storage rooms for their treasure hoard.

But rather than me telling you all about Finn & Jake's awesome Tree Fort why don't you take a look at this amazing illustration by Max Degtyarev and check the whole place out for yourself!

Incredibly Realistic Sculptures Of Ice King And Lemongrab From Adventure Time

The characters on Adventure Time are purposely drawn in a completely unrealistic style to suit the strange and silly tone of the show- and because they would look totally creepy if drawn to look realistic.

In fact, most of the characters on the show would probably look quite horrifying in real life and give kids nightmares, especially Simon the Ice King and that sourpuss the Earl of Lemongrab.

Sculptor Adam Edwards decided to show the world just how creepy Lemongrab and the Ice King would look in real life by creating unnervingly realistic busts of the two baddies.

This transformation has not only caused the characters to lose their cartoony appeal- it has taken them from the Land of Ooo and transported them straight to Westeros!

Dreaming Baby Hippo is the Cutest Thing You'll See Today!

The cuteness, it burns! This YouTube clip is only 20 seconds long, but that's enough to convince us just how cute Cincinnati Zoo's baby hippo Fiona is when she's dreaming. The hippo, born prematurely 9 weeks ago, is probably dreaming about something yummy to eat seeing how she licks her chops like that!

Take a look:

Then head on to the Cincinnati Zoo's Fiona page for more cuteness. Oh, okay, one more video:*/p

Battle of the Century

Nature abhors a vacuum, so these cats are just acting natural. Redditor camrymonster says this is his first comic. He must already be an artist. He was inspired by his own cats.

Striped one is Thor. Grey one is Walter. Thors the favorite so he got the killshot. Stop peeing on the bathroom mat Walter

Let's hope camrymonster continues to illustrate Thor and Walter's adventures.  -via reddit

Why is this Chicken So Big?

Yeah, you can tell this is a big chicken. When he finally squeezes his whole body through the door of the coop, you'll see he's even bigger than you thought! Wait, how big is he really? We can only tell when a hen shows up in the background.

It's like Big Bird crossed with Foghorn Leghorn! This is a Brahma rooster. They are bred to be big, but the sight of one emerging from a regular-sized chicken house is just too funny to resist.  -via Metafilter

RIP Chuck Berry

The St. Charles County Police responded to an emergency call at the home of legendary rock pioneer Chuck Berry west of St. Louis early Saturday. He could not be revived, and was pronounced dead.

(YouTube link)

From 1955 to 1958, Mr. Berry knocked out classic after classic. Although he was in his late 20s and early 30s, he came up with high school chronicles and plugs for the newfangled music called rock ’n’ roll.

No matter how calculated songs like “School Day” or “Rock and Roll Music” may have been, they reached the Top 10, caught the early rock ’n’ roll spirit and detailed its mythology. “Johnny B. Goode,” a Top 10 hit in 1958, told the archetypal story of a rocker who could “play the guitar just like ringin’ a bell.”

Mr. Berry toured with rock revues and performed in three movies with Mr. Freed: “Rock, Rock, Rock,” “Mr. Rock and Roll” and “Go, Johnny, Go.” On film and in concert, he dazzled audiences with his duck walk, a guitar-thrusting strut that involved kicking one leg forward and hopping on the other.

Chuck Berry was 90.

A Good Spot at the Beach is Hard to Find ... for Humans and Seals Alike!

Photos: Mike Page

Whether you're a sunbathing human or seal seeking rest and refuge from the ocean, a spot on the beach sure can be hard to find. Aerial photographer Mike Page snapped this photo of thousands of seals and cormorants on Scroby Sands, a shoal off the coast of Great Yarmouth in England.

Page, 76, was flying over the sea near Great Yarmouth when he spotted something unusual around Scroby Sands. "‘So I thought we’ll go and investigate – well thousands and thousands of seals," the pilot said to Metro. "I've never seen so many in 40 years of flying."

Can you guess how many seals there are selling seashells by the seashore?

Made for Each Other

Isn't that how it goes: you get all deep and philosophical just as someone farts. That will bring you right back to earth! Chris appreciates the gifts he has. Life is good when you find someone who is somewhat like you, and then you raise children together to be somewhat like you, too. This is the latest from Lunarbaboon.

How to Clear a Path Through 60 Feet of Snow

Route 6 in Japan runs from Toyama on the coast, through a tunnel under Mt. Tateyama, and on to Nagano. Mt. Tateyama is part of the Hida Mountains, where snow falls are measured in feet instead in inches. The mountains can get 125 feet of snow in a year! That's why a part of Route 6 is called Snow Canyon. It is closed in winter, but come spring, someone has to clear all that snow off the highway. While hundreds of snowplow drivers work all winter clearing the streets of Toyama, the Snow Canyon project starts with finding where the road is under 60 feet of snow. Then it get really technical. Read about the process of uncovering Snow Canyon at Atlas Obscura.

That kind of behavior could very well be misunderstood, but we get the point. Besides, you should never pass up an opportunity for delicious homemade dahi vadas. This is the newest comic from Lunarbaboon.

Trout Jumps Out Of Water And Turns Into Fishsicle

As spring starts to creep in and thaw the frost it's important to remember how good it feels to get out of the bitter cold and warm your bones again, because winter can be a killer.

Just ask this poor trout how he feels about winter...oh wait, you can't, he's frickin' dead, frozen to the side of a bridge after taking a leap like a fishheaded fool.

Decorah fish hatchery biologist Brian Malaise discovered the unfortunate trout stuck to one of the hatchery's aluminum baffles while he was making his morning rounds.

So how did it happen? Let's get all scientifical:

When objects of different temperatures come into contact, they want to achieve thermal equilibrium (the point at which one is no longer warmer than the other). It’s this heat transfer that led the trout straight to Davey Jones’ locker. The moment the surfaces came into contact, the metal robbed the fish it of its body heat. And because aluminum is so conductive – it’s one of the most conductive common metals – the transfer happened fast enough to freeze the fish’s water-coated skin to the baffle.

Dreadful Disguises - Only A Hack Would Wear Such Hackneyed Disguises!

Dreadful Disguises by WinterWolfMedia

When unfortunate things happen to innocent children you can bet Count Olaf is behind the tragedy, and that heartless hack of an actor doesn't care who he hurts when he's trying to fill his coffers with pilfered coin. But Olaf's worst affronts always involve his acting, because the man is a deplorable actor who can't even pull off a simple sailor persona without breaking character to threaten the Baudelaire kids. And if the townsfolk weren't so stupid they'd have seen through his terrible acting and realized Olaf was always a step or two away from every morbid mishap, but perhaps it is the terrible fate of the Baudelaire family to be surrounded by imbeciles at all times!

Bring home this Dreadful Disguises t-shirt by WinterWolfMedia and watch the world begin to take pity on you for sitting through the entire season of a book adaptation based on the dreadful and dreary lives of three orphaned children. It also makes a good handkerchief when the tears of empathy start to flow.
